Bill.Ashworth Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 I am booked into Leighton Buzzard in two weeks time. Is there anything specific that I need to worry about for this centre? Any advice at all would be much appreciated. One thing I am slightly concerned about is the harness mountings. I have four point harnesses and I have used the bosses on the chassis member along with 25mm spacers supplied by Westfield. The only problem is that the clips foul the inertia reel turrets (which I have not used). Quote
Rich C Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Bill, I think that most people use the inertia reel turrets for one of the eyebolts and the boss on the chassis rail with a spacer underneath the other eyebolt. Rich. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 use the inertia reel turrets for one of the eyebolts and the boss on the chassis rail with a spacer underneath the other eyebolt. For harnesses four points you should really use the correctly positioned lugs with spacers rather than utilise the inertia mount as the inertia mount is not located to optimise the harness fitting Most folks tend to fit some inertias for SVA and change to harnesses after - you can pick up some half decent inertias cheap from a scrappy and swap over after Quote
lunny Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 I passed sva in shrewsbury with a 4 point harness, using the reel mounts and the harness mount + spacer. You can change it to suit what you want once youve passed. The only other thing which may catch you out is when they put a pole in the middle of drivers seat with a swivel bracket on the bottom and a dome on the top. the dome represents your head and is moved around the cockpit pivoting from the seat. if it can hit anything with less than about a 2mm radius it is considered too sharp in a crash and will fail. mine failed on one of westfields first brake warning lights as it was mounted in the middle of the dash. That reminds me make sure your brake warning light has a exclamation mark and a pair of brake shoes on it (! as youll fail if it hasnt . Dont forget the westfield sva bolt cover kit for the front suspension bolts/nuts Martin Quote
Rich C Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Mark, I was not trying to suggest to anyone that the harness eye bolt should be permanently fixed in the inertia reel turret, only for the purpose of the test. As Bill said, his harness clip is fouling on the turret when using both chassis rail lugs. Rich. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Rich No worries, but it is better to explain as much as poss - and easy to forget to swap to correct position in the euphoria of passing SVA Quote
benjyboots Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 A quick query to add here. I've taken heed of the advice to use the outer mounting point, and the inward inertia reel mounting point for 4 point willans jobbies. The point i've noticed is that the outer mounting eyelet is 25mm below the inward one using the spacer which westfield supplied me on the outer eye, and no spacer on the inner eye. Do these eyelets have to be level in order to pass SVA? Quote
steppenwolf Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 No they do not have to be level - just ABOVE a certain height that I have conveniently forgotten! Sadly that required height is higher than the top of the rear chassis member. Quote
busapower2001 Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Benjyboots, Nicely raised point. I am just fitting my harnesses at the moment and was thinking the same thing - asymmetry looks bizarre for SVA!. It's this sort of temporary/pointless requirement that makes a mockery out of elements of the SVA (although I am fully in favour of sensible regulation.. which I think 90% or so of the SVA is). Why is it so important to have the mounts at a certain height relative to the ground plane!?!? ... ok I can see if they didn't specify some sensible min height you'd get some t@t putting the upper harness mounts on the floor of the car... but surely the SVA reg should be a distance (with a tolerance range) relative to your shoulder position! Due to my height I have to have my seat mounted on the floor so I can sit within the roll over bar safety "volume" which means the perfect harness mount height for me is basically the top chassis rail height !! Rant over Andrew Quote
brianm Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Why is it so important to have the mounts at a certain height relative to the ground plane!?!? ... It isn't, the SVA required minimum height for the top mounts is measured from the seat cushion. Therefore if you drop the seats and bolts directly to the chassis, then the mounting points may come down to the cross member level Brian. Quote
