Do i want a Westfield?

Recommended Posts

Hi  :D

New to this Westfield idea, but i now have use of a 'normal' car that isnt mine, so i want to change my car for something really fun.

Dont know anything about westfields, but like the look better than c******ms.

What can i expect for £5k? :p

What 0-60's can i expect? :0

Should i buy private or trade? :t-up:

Anyone in Sheffield to look at potential cars with me??!! ;)

I here you can get them with a Rover V8. I am very familiar with these engines, what kind of price do these go for, and are they rare?

Any general info would be great.

Im good mechanically, have 3 landrovers so am used to maintaining my own, building engines etc...

Cheers

Graham

A few ideas from me.

5k should get you an oldish SE or SEi, doubt you'd be up into wide bodied territory for that money. Engine would probably be X/flow.

0-60 will still be better than anything you're likely to have driven before, certainly around the 6 second mark.

I'd be surprised if you can find a trade car in that price bracket to be honest. Buying private is fine, but try to take someone knowledgeable with you, with experience of Westfields.

Si (Studbuckle) is in the Sheffield area, I'm sure for a few beer tokens he'd be happy to oblige!

As for general info, that's a little hard. You need to have a look at what's out there, and then ask specific questions. Bear in mind a lot of your questions have likely been answered before, so try doing a search on here first.

Oh, and join the club, even before you get the car. Westfield World (the club mag) usually has plenty of cars for sale in it.

Thanks Andy,

Are you the 6' 2" one??!! I'm 6' 3" and a bit, so i may need the wide bodied version.

I edited my earlier post re V8's, what price bracket would a wide body, independant rear susp, Rover V8 model set me back?

Really i just want a fast fun car, and have never driven anything like a westfield before. I currently have a 2.5 V6 Vectra SRi, but its too big to be fun... although it is quick (8 secs).

What 0-60 would a V8 Westy produce?

I guess its just a case of being sensible picking one out, making sure the build has been done neatly... like brake lines / body panels are neat... wouldnt know what to compare the ride with so i'll certainly have to test a few out.

£5k isnt my ultimate budget, i could spend twice that but i dont really want to.

Cheers

Oh yeah and whats X/flow?

To do with carbs or what?

X-flow = Ford Crossflow engine

£10k will be likely starting point to find a V8

Performance will depend on state of tune but is going to be 5 secs or below.

But actually, biggest "performance" point is the way these cars handle - not much goes around corners quicker!! :D  :D

Definitely look at some vehicles - get to know what things to look for. Each one is different, and there are some "less good" ones out there.

Maybe when you've seen a few yourself, and have some serious prospects, enlist Si's help.

Also, go to the local meeting - you will probably see a few cars (depending on weather) and cab certainly pick a few brains (depending on who's there!!!;).

Search back through the Newbie section and also do some searches on points that interest you - you'll find a mine of information.

Good luck - you won't regret it!!

Forgot to address the height question. I am about 6'2", and if I'm honest my car is a little small for me (don't let my other half see that statement).

I could do with another inch or two on the seat to get my knee out of the way of the steering wheel. The seat is all the way back as it is, so I'd probably need to replace it for one with a thinner back.

Alternatively, what is the likelihood of being able to move the (floor mounted) pedals a few inches further away?

Andy (hijacking someone else's thread with his own questions again).

Hi studbuckle, i work nr Crystal Peaks and live in Ecclesall. May well be in contact if i seriously decide to take the plunge.

What insurance group would a 1.8 x/flow be? I think a V8 would be an idea for later down the line.

So i am looking at a wide body, 1.8.

Is there a lot of difference between handling on the independent susp models? I guess there is.

Are they all rear wheel drive?

So, how much 'grin factor' is involved in driving these beasts? Do you smile when you are being nailed to the seat rip roaring round country lanes?

Do the 1.8's sound okay? I am used to my toy cars having a V8 (the landrovers) and the vectra with a V6, i am concerned the 1.8 will be too whiney!

Insurance on most Westy's (assuming you are average risk) with a limited mileage specialist policy will be somewhere between £150 and £400 depending on engine size and your age - so its cheap!

X-flows tend to be 1.7 as a maximum I think.....

The x-flow is a proven unit but has a reputation for needing a bit more TLC than the more modern 16V units. Sounds like you don't mind tinkering so no problem there. They are approx. £1k cheaper car for car.

Indpendent gives better ride on bumpy roads. However, I think you need to consider how you will use car. IMO for 1 hour blats, a car thats a bit bumpy will not matter a jot!

Yes all definitely rear drive

 ;)  :D

The grin starts when the engine starts and usually stays until at least an hour after you get home....... :D

Sound is always awesome, just some are more awesome than others!!! :D  :D

You will not find it too whiney...
