d1unc Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Now that my Westy is all built, SVA'd and bedded in, I’ve booked my first track day. All I need now is a crash helmet. Any recommendations or suggestions of where I can buy - I am in the Northampton / Milton Keynes area. I think I am right in saying that I need one that meets the BS 6658-85A standard – am I going along the right lines? Cheers, Dunc Quote
Mike dB Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 I think I am right in saying that I need one that meets the BS 6658-85A standard – am I going along the right lines? Only for 'proper' tracks (?), I don't think there is an issue with Airfields, which is where I'd be doing my first ever trackday if I were you Quote
starter Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 IIRC Octagon are starting to insist on approved helmets i.e BS6568 Type A (or SA 2000.) If you are planning to do a few tracks days and maybe some sprints at sometime I would personally go for one of these. MikeW Quote
peterrosey Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Make sure you get a Type A approved one and check that the fit is good - this rarely seems to get a mention, but it's vital. Don't buy mail order - you need to try it before parting with money. With the strap done up, you should feel the helmet gripping your head and you should not be able to pull it up over the back of your neck. If you can, it could come off in a crash and is a waste of time. Also different brands offer different fits so, for example, a Shoei 59cm may be a different size to an Arai 59cm. Quote
