Forgive my stupidity, any idea of the size required?

:durr:

The options are:

3/16" Holes with 5/8" Dia. Slug.

3/16" Holes with 3/4" Dia. Slug.

1/4" Holes with 3/4" Dia. Slug.

1/4" Holes with 5/8" Dia. Slug.

3/16" Holes with 1" Dia. Slug.

1/4" Holes with 1" Dia. Slug.

bet I look like a right  :arse: now...

i didnt know fkall until i started posting on here, i still dont

but it dont stop you asking

i bought the3/16 with 5/8 slug, the smallest being better for the collumn i have.  its a ford escort m2 on early

narrow bodied then they moved onto allegro i think

anyway depending wether you need your collumn extended

or shortened ,you mark clearly on your collumn where the lug is to be put, then with the wheels dead straight, scribe the

top of your collumn, this is where the large spline on the lug

needs to be welded/machined on,  then take off your collumn

send to westfield, takes about a week for someone to get around to do it but its only  £23 inc delivery.

once received put boss onto collumn find your desired fixing

point, mark fixing holes onto steering wheel,

screw wheel to boss and your done,

Bobs your mothers brother.

all the best

I have all the gubbins for a quick release doodah just need it welded to my column, and I understand it's much easier if the column is OFF the car. ;)

Only problem is....my column is - what looks like - welded to the cross bar thingy underneath the scuttle  ???

Any Ideas??????

On my last car I had one from Demon Tweaks called a Snap Off. Inspite of the uninspiring name it was great and the advantage was that it was a bolt on affair. To remove you pulled two horizontal pegs out which are spring loaded and off it came. the hub which was bolted on remained on the car. I will get another for my new one. I also seem to remember that Z cars did one which was very cheap.

If the column was welded to the chassis, how would you turn it? D'OH......To remove the column, take the wheel off, remove the lower section, remove the seat (if it's a high back one) and withdraw the column from the top. You'll need a hammer to smash it past the top bearing, which will be U/S once the column is out.........

And yes, do all this stuff with the column removed. If it's an Escort column, factor in the price of a new top bearing (which isn't expensive, just a couple of quid, IIRC), cos you can't get the column out without smashing the bearing to bits.......

The Snap-Off items Jeff refers to are OK, but if it's the 6 sided fitment one (ie the boss looks like a big nut) then they have too much slack in them, IME. The Racetech one is much better.

I second jeff oakleys demon tweeks snap off one, works a treat, even now!

i looked at the snap off ones.  thought they were a bit big and ugly - just my opinion also a bit clumsy mechanism.

as for taking the column off - i didnt bother.  i was a project manager at the time and had a number of very good welders working for me.  tacked it, made sure it was straight and i have the large spline at the bottom (not the top).

i also had the weld ndt'd for peace of mind.

I think I'll take it up to the precision engineer I was going to use (0.2 miles up the road :D ) and see if he wants the column removed, I'm also having him weld on a new harness eye so I'd rather the whole car was up at his and not just bits of it, but if he wants it removed I'm sure we'll find a way.

Should be an Allegro one ;) Demon Thieves are pretty familiar with Westfields, they should know which one to sell you.

But it's much cheaper to go to the source, i.e. Raceparts rather than DT for a Racetech quick release boss.

Pete - they won't care what column you have, they'll just want to know what size "slug" you want to weld to the steering column.
