neilwillis Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Has anyone else bought a module build Westfield, and discovered the brake pipes at the front are an inch too short? I have tried fitting them every which way, but no matter what, they pull tight when the steering is locked over. I don't think for a moment I am doing anything I shouldn't be, and the only conclusion is that 15" pipes are simply not long enough because of the metal sleeves that make the first inch at each end inflexible. Anyone else had to swap theirs? Neil Quote
Blatman Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Is your bodywork on? If not, it may just be that you are turning the rack further than will be possible when the bodywork is on. If the body *is* on, and the rack properly "adjusted" so that the wheels aren't fouling the body on full lock, then send 'em back.......... Quote
timd Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Anyone else had to swap theirs? Yep, I did... Quote
neilwillis Posted February 16, 2003 Author Posted February 16, 2003 Yes, the body is on, and as I'm using a standard steering rack, the lock is not the problem I don't think. It appears to be what I thought. I'll ring Westfields tomorrow. Thanks gents Quote
Mike H Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 Maybe, your hoses are designed to be mounted 'throught the bodywork'. I know this is an approach they've been using for a while, esp. on cars with front mounted battery tray. If you mount the hoses through the bodywork then they probably are meant to be shorter. If you can use the chassis mounted brackets (best way IMO) then get them swapped. Mike Quote
hilux Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 Mine are through the bodywork, much neater. Quote
neilwillis Posted February 22, 2003 Author Posted February 22, 2003 I did consider that, but knowing what a b******* the brakes can be to bleed, I didn't want to have to do that if it comes to replacing the body work at some point. Got the new ones, and they're fine. Quote
CharlesEH Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 Interesting, because this is why I asked the same question on the technical forum - they didn't seem long enough. I did look at mounting the pipes through the panels, but I've already made the solid pipes to the brackets and frankly can't be arsed to remake them. I'm off home to measure my pipes, Charles Quote
Jester Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 Got the new ones, and they're fine. So what are the different lengths of the flexible pipes for (a) body to caliper, and (b) bracket to caliper so that we can be sure that we have the right one? Quote
benjyboots Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Im using the chassis mounted points for the front brake lines, and I've noticed that the flexible hose looks very tight approaching full lock. I've taken them off, and they measure about 380mm, are these long enough? Quote
hilux Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 only rears are difficult to bleed IMO Why is there a problem with fixing through the bodywork, its a lot neater and less likely to kink/tangle with suspension. Simply cut off original,Westfield brackets (less weight) Quote
neilwillis Posted March 4, 2003 Author Posted March 4, 2003 The correct ones for mine had the part number 2311014, and are 370mm long (excluding the threaded portion). I have already fitted them, so that measurement is not totally accurate. The original ones I was given with my kit were about 25mm shorter, and apparently meant for cars where the hose has to pass through the bodywork. I don't have the part number of the original ones now, but if you intend to fit your hoses through the brackets, you should have ones showing this part number (it is on the band wrapped round one end of the hoses).
