AndyC_772 Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 I'm about to buy my first home with a proper garage, and rather than letting it become the typical grubby no-go area that many garages end up, I'd like to make it a bit more civilised. More of an operating theatre for the Westy One of the first jobs will be to paint the walls and floor and install some decent lighting, but I'd also like to install some cupboards and racking to keep all my tools and old bits of cars. Does anyone have any recommendations for storage systems, racking, work benches and so on? Halfords have some stuff, but I can't help thinking that there has to be a better selection cheaper elsewhere. Cheers Andy. Quote
Blatman Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 No such thing as cheap garage equipment. If you think Halfords is expensive, check out the stuff made by Dural (I think. Can't find a web page just now......).....make sure you're sitting down though........ I use the £19 (each) Ikea wooden shelving at all 3 of my garages. I've had it in for about 4 years now, and it's still looks OK. One shelf will easily support my Cossie engine with gearbox, so they're strong enough. For cupboards and worktops, why not see if anyone is getting shot of some kitchen cabinets and a worksurface. It's what I'll be looking for next. You can add a steel section if you need a metal surface to work on, or for securing bench tools, and you can turn the sink into a parts washer........... Quote
Nick A Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Why not try an army surplus store if you have such a thing localy They often have shelving/racking type stuff and it usually cheap I recently got a filling cabinet in working order for the garage cost me £5 Worth a go Quote
chazpowerslide Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Try Mackays Storage in Cambridge they have a website. I got some good quality shelving for £35 a unit in galvanised steel that is very sturdy, size approx 1200x2000x500 with 5 shelves per unit. I've got 5 of these, and a custom made (by me) steel topped workbench and 7x3 foot double flourescent lights. It makes a world of difference having enough space and light to work in. I can't recommend Mackays highly enough, very helpfull. HTH Chaz. Quote
brianm Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Most garages tend to be fitted with ex kitchen units. -- No problem there, they can be excellant for the job, parts storage etc. Incidentaly I have recently fitted IKEA magnetic kitchen utensil racks in the garage , -- they make excellant spanner/ socket holders. However there is allways ex industrial shelving stuff availlable if thats what you're after. I'm disposing of 40 or so trollies at present, size approx 2mtr high x 1 mtr wide x 1/2 mtr deep, on wheels, with 2 shelves, in galv steel, and in perfect condition. If anyone requires any of these, then please give me a call Brian. Quote
moomin Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 I would have to concur with Chaz about Mackays - a godsend to my build having somewhere like that in close proximity... but then I do live in Cambridge. I got a tip off for garage shelves and got mine from Argos! They are plastic slot together stuff and the large set can take the entire weight of the car - pretty sensible price, won't go rusty or rotten, screwed to the wall, solid as a rock. (pics in the "Preparing" section of my website I expect - can't remember the product code) Moomin Quote
neilwillis Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 The latest Argos extra catalogue page 104 has a range by Stanley. They look very tidy indeed. Once my wallet gets over the trauma of the build, I shall be getting some myself. 6 cupboards, shelving and a wall rack all for £429.00 sounds a good buy to me! Quote
Fat Albert Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Try Costco for shelving 6ft, 4 shelf, plastic, rated 30kg per shelf £19.95 8ft, 4 shelf, metal rack, wooden shelf, 50kg per shelf, £29.95 and 3 ton high lift trolley jack + 3 ton axle stands £60 easily lifted the eleven high enough to get the axle stands under the chassis on the highest setting Quote
Blatman Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 Can't find a web page just now...... Fount it....... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 for £429.00 sounds a good buy to me What There is a place up by you that sells "seconds" kitchen units - I'm sure if you asked for some offcuts or damaged goods you could do it for less Quote
neilwillis Posted March 2, 2003 Posted March 2, 2003 You can always do it for less, but your garage is your second home, aren't you worth that bit more? Quote
