a4gom Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 we've 2 hyper 7's, we haven't used them much in fact 1 isn't even run in yet. The main reason is spare time but one of the other reason's is that by the time we know we've got some spare time it's too late to charge everything up. I've seen people using starter boxes with glow plug heater attachments, these are 12v and i'm thinking one of these could sort out a couple of issues for me. 1, i could leave the battery on my optimate so it's always ready to go and two it would save me having to put the plug heaters on charge 14hrs before hand. 2, 1 car is still getting run in and the other isn't set up that well (2nd hand) I'm new to it and they are been driven by kids so i'm always having to start them which at the moment is a hassle taking tops of and trying to get it back on and away before it stalls, it would be easier with a box. anyone use one, got any advice / recommendations / sources cheers Quote
langy Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I've used starter boxes in the past, similar to this which used 2 No 7.2v battery packs. You could quite easily run it from a gel type battery. For the glow, I used to use a rechargeable glow supply or one that connected to a 12v battery and being able to vary the supply to the glow plug. I'm Quote
dombanks Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 im supprised your glow plug thingy runs out so quick mine used to go for weeks between charges?? however a starter box is well worth the money. unless they have changed it i used to go through pull starts on my hyper 7 like the bombay squits goes through you after a dodgy curry... and at the cost of whatever they were (i thinink 25 quid) i might just as well spent out on the starter at the beginning. i was a little ham fisted with mine but my mate an i bought one each at the same time and he went through them also just not as many as i did. great car tho, if you havnt already got them i suggest ugrading the cast turn nuckles to the cnc ali ones and getting a beefy servo for the steering. at first i used the ones from my tamia battery car and the steering one just nackered up quickly. i replaced it with a better one and the improvement in the responce was brilliant. i dont remember breaking much else and i used to punish mine. i ran it in an the business school carpark at the university of liverpool, they have speed bumps there that if you hit at full chat you could get a good 10+m of air at about head height Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 hiya I also run Hyper 7's as well as Nitro Helicopters. I use a roto start on the Hyper which to be crude is a hex fixing that replaces the pull start and you start useing a starter or battery drill.... it works very well but does break occasional {parts very cheap}. If you look at the E start system on the Schmacher Menace its the same Start box is the way forward {I need one for CarpetStu}. I have my glow charger on charge all the time {i have 3} and I have the glow charger on a the flight box for the helicopter which runs from a 12v gel battery. Again.... time constraints prevent mush use this year BUT still start them at least once a month to run them up {just as you would a Westfield} any advice on settings for the Hyper's just PM me...... carpetstu Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Start box is the way forward {I need one for CarpetStu}. I am not gonna be traded for a starter box! I am worth more than that ! Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 hahaha lol...... just waiting for the right one at the right price to come along.... your car does now start on the pull cord, although you do get a neck / shoulder strain each time after several dozen pulls....... Quote
a4gom Posted September 28, 2010 Author Posted September 28, 2010 Cheers chaps, sources good makes, what to look for would be handy. RedditchJay I may well be in touch but hopefully I can sort the tuning myself with a bit of patience. I really need to go out by myself and spend some time getting used to them / get them set up. I always go out with the kids and I'm sure you can guess what their patience is like, the new one runs but not well yet and we end up not been able to get it started, the 2nd hand one is really temperamental and almost certain not to start. The last 3 or four trips we've spent more time driving to the field than using the cars. Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 the main thing is use good fuel {I use Byrons 20%} and set the carb very slighty rich on the main needle........... too rich and the engine runs cold and cuts out. {bogs down} They normall run at around 200f in temp {temp gun is a good purchase}. they can cold seize if run too hard when cold............. Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 ALSO adjust the carb using 1/8th turns only, its easy to adjust from one extreme to the next, once set up use the same make of fuel with same nitro % and should be a turn key car everytime Quote

Are you sure thats from pulling the cord on the car ? Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 indeed yes....... many good pulls in the garage Quote
langy Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 adjust the carb using 1/8th turns only, its easy to adjust from one extreme to the next and don't do what I done once, when tuning a friends race engine I was leaning it and went a bit too far, engine came to an abrupt halt goodbye £300 engine Quote
RedditchJay Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 ouch..... like any two stroke / oil in fuel mixer... bit of oil smoke is goooooood.. Quote
a4gom Posted October 4, 2010 Author Posted October 4, 2010 New fastrax King starter box sat on my kitchen top with glow igniter, after a good hour working the instructions out the box is ready to go but I haven't a clue how or where you fix the pegs etc to locate the car. Tips as usual gratefully received, pictures may be better! Cheers Quote
RedditchJay Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 someones been spending lol the pegs are adjusted to sit under the chasis so only the fysheel comes into contact with the rubber spinning wheel Quote
