DITCH Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Garmin....... I would recommend Garmin, thats what they do best, and nothing else, Tom Tom is reletivley new at this game, compared with Garmin, especially as they produced for the following, un like Tom Tom and others mentioned ? 1) Aircraft Navigation ( Flight Deck Equipment) Also Helicopter applications. 2) Avionics & saftey equipment ( Inc Commercial applications) 3) Radar & Auto pilots 4) Marine Equipment including Navigation for commercial Shipping. The list goes on, I have had my Garmin for 5yrs, without any problems, may be a little more expensive than the other cheap Gimicky rubbish thats on the market, but you get what you pay for in life!!!!!! Ditch. Quote

Ditch. I know people in the avionics industry and they all use Garmin satnavs so on recommendations I bought the Nuvi 1340 and have just done a 1600 mile round trip in France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Belgium It worked faultlessly, is entirely accurate all over those countries with regard to speed limits and cameras, re-routes in seconds in case of errors and was £108 from Amazon - a steal in my view. You can get the next one up, the 1340T with traffic allerts but from those that have it the announcements are normally just as you hit the tailback (as per RDS) Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 TomTom for me had three now and would have another. Tried Garmin and come back to TomTom Quote

tex Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 garmin first - had one for years and the only thing that lets them all down is having to pay a lot of money for updates and euro maps (unless you bought it in the package originally) or as iv said before - nokias new sat nav for the fone - free for life free updates free traffic warnings free auto back up (so you never lose your favourites and routes) free software updates free euro maps (every country) the detail in the map is as good as the stand alone units with the added benefit of internet connections for weather updates - added app integration etc bluetooth integration lets you use hands free with the likes of vox activation (voice activated talking) so you can buy an intercom for the westy - link it to your mobile via bluetooth (auto connect) if you receive calls your voice activates the call response. all this while listening to music, sat nav, etc. downsides the in built gps unit in mobile fones isnt as good as stand alone units - BUT you can buy a seperate gps unit for about £50ish to hide away under your dash that you plug into your fone giving you as good accuracy or better. none other.. bargain of the decade in my eyes - why carry 2 boxes of gizmos filling your pockets up when you always have your fone anyway?? common sense Quote
Andy Banks Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I have Tom Tom XL IQ Routes (2) Europe. Very good, works a treat. I've borrowed SWMBO's older One XL as it has itinerary planning which is a blatting must IMHO, the XL IQ does not which is a shame. If I had the money, I'd go for the new biker Tom Tom Quote
nikpro Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 All the sat navs I have tried are prety good and it 'boils down' to what display you preffer. I found the navigon the clearest and best IMO. The only Sat Nav I bought that I didn't like was the garmin Nuvi - I bought because I thought it would be really good with Garmin being experts but the route programming was Pants! (They should probably stick to aircraft & Ships because they certainly don't understand roads!) It kept taking me down single track roads even though it was set for towing/HGV etc! wasn't impressed and sold it within 4 months. Now use Navigon on iPhone 4 and it's excellent Quote
