intermotor Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Hello, Could someone explain me whats all the difference in the different numberplates you have in the UK? Q, Private Plate, Y, Correctly registred ?? Im about to buy a Westfield in the UK and bring it over to The Netherlands.. but what plate do i need?? And/Or do i need a plate? And why does nobody want a Q plate??? BTW. I'm searching a fast well build car (preferably, Sei with Zetec 2.0, Toyota 4ACE, or VX 20 16v) for a reasonable price. Thanx, Marcel - The Netherlands (marcel@intermotor.com) Quote
neilwillis Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Q plates are given to kit cars consisting of parts of an unknown age, rebuilt cars etc. All other registration plates have the first letter to represent the year of manufacture. Recently this has changed to a new system where the plates change every 6 months, and consist of 2 letters, 2 numbers, and three letters. I understand that with this system the numbers represent the age of the vehicle, the first number being either a 0 or a 5 denoting which six months of the year it was first registered in. Vehicles with the age related plates must have been built with only one reconditioned part in the case of a kitcar. A car having Q plates doesn't however mean it is in any way inferior to one with an age specific plate. Quote
doomZday Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Is there any difference between the registration papers of a "home-built" Westfield and a factory built one? Would a factory built kit car get a non-Q registration? And does every home built car get a Q registration even if it's built from outright new parts? /Markus (living in Sweden) Quote
intermotor Posted February 16, 2003 Author Posted February 16, 2003 Ok... but can a car with a Q plate can be registred to someone else? and/or can the be exported? and what do the papers of a Q plate say about 'year of build'? Final question... when i dont want to drive the car in the Uk, but export it to Holland. To my knowledge i only need the papers and not the plate..?? Somewhere a saw an add saying 'without the plate it would cost 800 UK pounds less'.. so cann i realy buy a car without the plate but with the SVA papers? Marcel - The Netherlands Quote
jonlewis Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 Hi, To try and answer the question. In the UK, we are allowed to purchase a plate with a specific combination of letters and numbers, this is a private plate. We can then transfer this between cars for a small fee. That is why you see "£800 less without the plate", the seller wants to keep his private plate. When the number is transferred, the car then gets it's normal age related plate back. If a Westfield is made from all new parts, it will be given a new registration number, currently xx03xxx, this is true if home or factory built. If a Westfield is made up from many donor parts, it will be give a "Q" plate. Reality is that many "Q" plate cars can be just as good as a "new" car, however, because a crashed and rebuilt car will be given a "Q" registration, some stigma is attached and therefore many people do not want that. From an export point of view, I believe that all you need is all paperwork which includes the date of new registration, and the actual plate does not matter at all. You will need to check with your local registration authorities. Jon Quote
AndyC_772 Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 My understanding is that SVA is a UK-specific approval - I'm not sure that it actually counts for anything in other countries, so if you want to export the car permanently, you may need to get it inspected and tested in your own country. I guess there may be exemptions that allow the car to be driven on a UK plate in Europe for a while - any experts in motoring law around? A. Quote
intermotor Posted February 17, 2003 Author Posted February 17, 2003 Yes thats true... I only need the cars official papers without the plate. I once bought a Ducati motorcycle in Italy and had only the bike and its papers (no plate). Then in the Netherland the bike needed to be tested by our dutch authorities.. but to do that you need the bikes official documents on which its MARK, MODEL, CATALOGPRICE and DATE OF FIRST ENTRANCE (YEAR OF BUILD) is written. I always thought that on a Q-plate that data is not written and that a Q plate car could only be owned and driven by the person who registred the car. I also tought that the car could not be sold without a new SVA Cheers, Marcel Quote
brianm Posted February 17, 2003 Posted February 17, 2003 Hi Intermotor, I always thought that on a Q-plate that data is not written The date of registration is printed on the reg document. a Q plate car could only be owned and driven by the person who registred the car. Not true, they can change hands as freely as any other reg. I also tought that the car could not be sold without a new SVA A car built afer late 1998 can only be registered in the UK after undergoing and gaining SVA approval, Nothing to do with buying or selling. If you buy a car of this age it is a fair indication that it has been screwed together correcly. Incidentally it may still then be issued with a Q plate, dependant on the history of its component parts. Cheers Brian. Quote
