Paul Edden Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 Hi Scott, My small angry one has a 55 plate Suzuki Vitara - had it from new and it is brilliant. It is the 2L deisel version - I reckon we get around 35 - 38 mpg solo (with a lead foot) and it tows the westie with ease - have also towed a large caravan, again - no problem. The real beauty of this car is; 1: Totally reliable 2: Second gearstick gives you 4WD, High Ratio, Low Ratio and Diff Lock. We have used it in our field to pull out tree stumps - should tow a jet ski up a slippery slope ok. Plus - lot cheaper than a Shogun. Quote

lippydave Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 sorry but l200 and ml270 have real poor reps! L200 is a weird one. People seem to either have a bad one and hate it with a passion, or otherwise totally swear by them.... I haven't had this one long enough to form a solid opinion, but so far seems pretty good as long as you treat it as a truck rather than a car. It's crude and a bit agricultural but it gets the job done, just don't expect car like handling or performance. Oh and if yer feeling silly it can be easily persuaded to rear wheel steer... I think it helps if you go for the Animal (or Warrior) spec, they have a slightly uprated ecu from the factory which gives a bit more grunt and most of them (Animals) come with a rear lsd. A lot of the typical problems seem to stem with folk buying a base level truck and kitting them with an aftermarket chip which invariably seems to lead to issues.....I found this out after I'd got mine, but luckily it's an Animal with lsd and factory bits... It's still a truck fitted with leather seats tho'...... The ML has the same typical diesel delivery problems as most of the cdi common rail diesel Mercs. The build quality is a bit patchy but apart from the spill pipe issue ours has been pretty good. One of my pals had another 270CDI and it seemed to be a fair bit juicier than ours but also generally reliable aside from breaking the window switches and needing a complete switch pack module for about 130 quid... Can only speak from personal experience, altough if you research L200's on the net there are a lot of scary stories out there... Quote
Bananaman Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 Scott, I'd go for something a bit smaller & more car like, even the X5 was a bit of a dog to drive on a daily basis so F' knows what a Shogun would be like Also the fact that your fuel bills will double will P**s you off Not sure how much mileage you do now? but work out your fuel costs /month i'm guessing £150'ish upped to £250/300!!! Nissan X-trail's are supposed to be good What's the Budget for new mota? Quote

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 And don't forget the price of consumables like tyres on a big 4x4, get a puncture and the bill can be a bit eye watering. Quote

Matt Seabrook Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 I have had an L200 Animal 2006 new shape for 2 1/2 years and done over 30000 miles in it. I am getting 35ish MPG average including some towing but not much. So far other than servicing it has been reliable and will go most places that I have tried so far but nothing too adventurous. To be honest I love it and would have another. As for tyres just replaced the tyres on my truck and they still had 4mm of tread on two and three on the others and they have done 32000 miles. Yes they are more expensive than tyres for a 407 but how many of them will do more than 20000 miles on a set of tyres. Quote
