Engine Choice

Am i right in saying that it is not difficult to swap out a Zetec for a VX?  Do you just need to get engine mounts moved or is there much more work involved?

Also my friend is looking at using a VX 2litre engine with fuel injection (not throttle bodies) instead of converting it to carbs, what would be the advantages and disadvantages of using this over Carbs?

If you mean the standard injection that comes with the engine, then I think you will find it just won't fit. The air box/reservoir will be much higher than the top of the engine, so you'd have to cut half the bonnet away, and I'm sure the induction system would foul the chassis. If you need any measurements I've 2 units with the original system on in the garage ;)

Cheers for that mate, I will let him know that it won't fit.

Do you need to move the engine mounts then to fit the VX

Yep, the standard VX injection system will not fit. The plenum is too tall, the inlet manifold sweeps down the side of the engine and sits where the steering column wants to go, and IIRC fouls the chassis too. And the standard injection wiring heads the wrong way over the engine which means the ECU would have to be fitted at the front of the engine bay, which in turn would mean trying to fit into a waterproof box of some kind.

Just guessing, but I would say that the engine mount holes would have to be re-drilled in the chassis, to swap to a VX. As well as changing loads of other stuff, depending on current spec of car in question.

Bell housing conversion, maybe even gearbox if MT75,

Propshaft if MT75,

New engine mounts,

new exhaust manifold,

new inlet manifold,

Coolant hoses,

Sump, etc, etc.

I dont believe I am actually going to say this but why does he want to swap to VX? For the money and hassle involved, he would be far better off spending some mullah on upgrading his present engine.

He is basically looking for a Westy that is minus an engine so that he can drop the VX into it that he has.  We found a car that has just had the zetec lump removed.  The car we found has a type 9 gearbox so that wont need to be changed although he would need to get a new exhaust manifold.

Does any one know of any cars about that just need an engine or is part/mostly built, for sale?

Cheers
