ChrisF Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 Being not that mechanically minded I would appreciate a bit of advice. I have a problem selecting the reverse option. I have a type 9 gearbox and the clutch travel seems to be correct. I presume the clutch is sticking? Is this due to limited use (b****y weather) or something else? What should I do to sort it out? PS. Luckily I prefer going forwards alot more. Quote
stu999 Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 Chris, is it crunching when you try and select reverse, or is it just that it will not go in? Stu. Quote
Turbo Tommo Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 Most likely a seizing spigot bearing Quote
kennedyj Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 It's more than likely that the clutch is dragging. I found that setting up the clutch cable "by the book" resulted in some drag that made engaging reverse difficult. I also noticed that first gear engagement was baulky due to the fight from the synchomesh. Try tighteneing the clutch cable a good bit and see if the situation improves and then back it off for the optimal adjustment. If this doesn't work, Turbo Tommo's suggestion may be the cause. -John. ChrisF Posted February 13, 2003 Author Posted February 13, 2003 The problem is when I try to select reverse, once I get it in gear it is fine. The selection of the forward gears is a bit stiff but not what I would consider a problem. I shall try tightening the clutch cable at the weekend and see if this solves the problem. Quote
furtive Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 My reverse is tricky to find too, so I would be interested in hearing if tightening the clutch cable fixed it... Quote
Turbo Tommo Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 Do you have an extension fitted, coz they can be a bit troublesome. Quote
NevilleBull Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I had both problems. I found out that there appears to be a design fault on the pedal box. I'm not exactly sure of the details, but if you are interested Mick Moberly from Hi Tech motorsport managed to resolve the problems with it. He modified the pedal box and re-adjusted something else that I can't remember. He says it was an easy job to do, but clearly to get it perfect required modifications. Sorry for my lack of technical information, but if you give Mick a call he would be more than happy to explain it thoroughly to you. Mick Moberly: 01384 561777 Cheers, Neville Quote
stu999 Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 The problem is when I try to select reverse, once I get it in gear it is fine Got that bit mate, but if it seems to crunch as you manage to get it into reverse, it's probably clutch/spigot bearing related. If it makes no noise (just ****** awkward....) then it could be your gear lever extension wantins some fettling. Or as Neville says, it could be both.... Quote
ChrisF Posted February 14, 2003 Author Posted February 14, 2003 Dry sunny day, so raced home from work - you will all appreciate this. I have just been out tonight for a blast - good news no crunching when selecting reverse, it just took the gear smoothly. I had not even adjusted the clutch cable yet. The car had been parked up for quite a while before I got it, maybe the bearing had seized slightly I hope to get a few miles in over the weekend so shall see if it plays up again. Thanks for all the advice chaps. Quote
