steve_m Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 What's the best/usual grease to use for brake caliper sliders, in particular the Ford Sierra rear calipers ? I did a search and nothing came up. Thanks, Steve Quote
Mike H Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I've got my brackets minus slider bolt in a carrier bag under my desk ready to get them blasted. When I put them back together (if I don't get brakets/sliders included with recon calipers) I was just going to use normal grease. I don't think they move much at all so I doubt anything else would be necessary. That's all I'm going to do, I may be wrong tho' The tricky bit will be getting the rubber sleeve back over the rusted 'lip' on the slider bolt. Hopefully it will stay in place. cheers Mike Quote
steve_m Posted February 4, 2003 Author Posted February 4, 2003 Thanks Mike, I've just got recon calipers from Brakes International and they came without the slider but with new seals. Quote
Mike H Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Ah, right. I was going to give them a call to see what was included. You've just answered my question. How much were they and do they look ok? thanks Mike Quote
Paul Ash Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Use copper slip as on the other brake moving parts. Ordinary grease is not high enough in temperature rating and will turn to oil when the brakes heat up!!! Quote
steve_m Posted February 4, 2003 Author Posted February 4, 2003 Thanks paul, good point ! Mike, they look good, gold colour, they were £48+£30 surcharge+vat. Arrived next day. They also have a scheme where you pay an extra £6 and they'll arrange to collect your exchange calipers. I'll post some more detail when i get home. Quite cheap compared to the rest. Steve Quote
markg Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 my recons came with grease for the carriers! Quote
steve_m Posted February 4, 2003 Author Posted February 4, 2003 Not much to add really, box says hard chromed piston. Made by Budweg. Looks very similar to the original Ford caliper Quote
windy Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Silicon grease (white) is what to use. Don't use copperslip cos it will go hard after a time and will cause the sliders to stick. Quote
stu999 Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Ding to what Windy said! Copper grease is there to stop things seizing, not to keep things moving (a subtle but very important difference...) Quote
DavidC Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 I just got my brakes from Brakes International. Gotta say they look good, but I've realised that they don't have those long long wierd bolts, shown here http://www.n-hatton.demon.co.uk/Westie....led.jpg Where do I get them from and how much are they gonna cost me?? If I'd have known I would have removed them from the exchange pair before I sent them back. DC Quote
Mike H Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 Oh, that's a bummer David. You 'may' be able to get them from your local Ford dealer. I asked my local and when we found them in the system I think he said they weren't available (or maybe just not at that time). You may end up having to get another pair from a scrappy But someone must supply them somewhere, if you find out give us a shout. Maybe just give Brakes Int. a call and explain or maybe they can supply new ones + the dirt seals that go with them. Mike Quote
DavidC Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 Well the calipers have come with the seals but not the bolts. I've emailed them, and will phone tomorrow (the brakes only turned up at 7 o'clock tonight, apparently they got delivered to the neighbours). Hopefully they'll put the ones from my exchange pair in a jiffy bag and post'm back to me. Oh well DC Quote
