ian_perry Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Hi, Buy one of the many books available on servicing/tuning DCOE type carbs, there are loads around, normally just over a tenner. Well worth it! Will save a lot of head scratching. Ian Quote

Paul Ash Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 when re-setting float height use a drill bit (the reqd size) on its side and use it as a distance piece 40's are simple to strip, but go gently as alot of the pieces are fragile. Not wanting to teach you to suck eggs! but lay everything out on a clean area in the order of removal and to the relevant side of the carb. This makes it easier to remember when re-assembling. Use the diagram in the service kits to work out whats under each screw so you know everythings come out, before you end up blowing/dropping it on the floor when you least expect it!! Quote
harky Posted February 4, 2003 Author Posted February 4, 2003 Thanks for the tips.I recieved my carb service kits this morning and after looking at a few parts which I dont have a clue what there for, a book has been ordered.I wasnt sure when it came to servicing the carbs are you as well to leave the jetting to the pros if you are going to get a rolling road done anyway?? MarkJ Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I don't know what book you've ordered, but I used a Haynes Carb manual together with the Webcon website to service my 40's. Went surprisingly well too. MJ. Quote
Paul Ash Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I serviced my own carbs with the kits prior to rolling road. If that is your plan leave the jet selection to them!! but rebuild with existing jets otherwise they will only change them to suit/tweek your set up and you will pay twice!!! Use the book you've ordered to guide you on the strip / rebuild. They're not that complicated to o/haul. Why dont you inquire how much they charge for an o/haul!! as this may make your decision for you. As a guide the rolling road cost me £150.00 inc VAT & they only had to rejet carbs!! Quote
harky Posted February 4, 2003 Author Posted February 4, 2003 ill look into the price of an overhaul but i would like tinker myself to learn more about the carbs anyway. one last question i mentionioned the choke arms have seized solid and one of the reasons for the carb service is to sort this out hoping that this will improve starting but i once read that the twin 40s are more proned to flooding with the chokes and that pumping the pedal 4 times blah blah blah should start the car ok. stu999 Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 There isnt many people who connect up the choke levers when using sidedrafts, as you say, a couple of pumps of the throttle is usually enough to fire the motor up. Cheers, Stu. Quote
