samcooke Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I've been running my old Porker on 205/50/15s at the front and 225/50/15s at the back, most recently on Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. These aren't the standard sizes but seem to be best to make it handle nicely. All of a sudden it seems no one makes 225/50/15s except Toyo as a T1R - for about £105. They also make 205/50/15s for about £75 and 195/50/15s are £38. How does that work then? One third the price cos they're 30mm narrower? Seems daft. And why does no b****r make the 225s any more? The only other tyre I can find in that size is some Yokohama designed for the NSX and they don't make that in any other size so it's no good to me. Quote
B5234FT Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 no 1/3 the price cos they sell 6 ties as many of them. Same reason no one does the rears. 195 50 15 fits every hot hatch of the last ten years and 205 50 15 fits a lot of rwd cars like e36 beemers etc. No one uses as wide and low a profile at 225 50 15 anymore but youll find going up to 16 increases choice. My vectra ran on 205 55 16 and they were 43 a tyre. Dads volvo T5 wanted 205 50 15 and they were hard to get and about 80 quid! Quote
peterg Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 yep, supply and demand sets tyre prices so if you need a size not many people want then expect it to cost more Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Be thankfull you can at least still get something. We were looking last year for some 255/50/15's to go on a Dax Rush only to find there's nobody making anything close to that any more Best could do was to fork out on new rims and go up to 16's. Gadget Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 I recently wanted two tyres for my small box trailer - 145 x 10. Was first quoted £79................EACH! and I was told that was a cheepo budget tyre! Got a pair eventually for £52.00 total, balanced and fitted (thought that was expensive too!) Quote
carpetstu Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 try buying 275/35 20 now they are painful to price! Quote

I've also been looking for a pair of 225/50/15's as well, and could only find the T1Rs or Yoko A022s or cheapy budget stuff...... Have currently got someone on the case searching for some other decent brand "old" new stock......If I/he founds summat I'll pass it on.... In my case it's only for a cheap old fun shed so don't wanna get carried away paying premium prices..... Quote
Pistol Pete Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 no 1/3 the price cos they sell 6 ties as many of them. Same reason no one does the rears. Everyone must be buying 13" Road Tyres then, only £50 a piece for A539, but struggled to get any decent in 215/45/17 for the tin top for under £100 each??? Quote
lippydave Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 PS. blackcircles.com are doing the Toyo T1R 225/50/15's at 96.50 each for supply only ie not fitted...hth Quote
Captain Colonial Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 At least it isn't a Bugatti Veyron - a set of four tyres costs £23,500. At every fourth tyre change, the Veyron’s rims must be stress tested for cracks and replaced if they are found wanting - at a cost of £7,050 per corner. Quote
bhouse Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 To be honest. Captain, that's what put me off buying one. It would have made too much of a dent in my Pianola fund Quote
