Best brakes to fit?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Can anybody tell me (or suggest a previous thread), which are the best brakes to fit to my new Westy SEiW (ETA Feb)?

I don't need super dooper race tech F1 brakes but enough for decent brakes in a Road/ Track Day car.

I also love the preety red/gold callipers showing through the wheels (boy racer coming out of me there   )

Thanks and regards

Mike Dempsey

Have a look here for starters.

I'm sure Catflap will be along in a minute to extoll the virtues of the Hi Spec brake set up he has recently fitted.

Me, I'd go for the CAT Motorsport calipers, and a set of Fluke Motorsport discs. Don't rule out the Westfield supplied Bremsport calipers though, 'cos they're very nice. The only thing you need to watch is that some of the suggested calipers don't have caliper dust seals. In practice, this doesn't seem to be an issue, but if you want a fit and forget solution, then dust seals on the pistons *should* be a consideration.

Ive had my Hi Spec ones for over a year now and found them to be both value for money and excellent in performance. They take Volvo 240 series brake pads and so are cheap to maintain. They also have dust seals. Ive heard bad things about the Willwoods flexing under braking and having no dust seals, but I have no experience of them myself.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.....

goodness me, Wilwood calipers DO NOT FLEX !!!  Having done a bit of digging around into this oft repeated "fact", it seems that there was one particular caliper which I think they had an issue with and this has since been discontinued.

I use the Wilwood Dynalite 2 kit (from Rally Design) with solid Cortina discs which I found to be good value for money and it offers very good stopping ability, particularly with Hawk Black ferro carbon pads.  I would, however, suggest that an AP master cylinder is also a useful addition to this set up as it helps reduce the pedal travel.

HOWEVER, the fact remains that for many, many people the standard Ford M16 calipers are more than adequate for the job.  If the car is primarily for road use with the occasional track day then personally I'd stick with them because they're cheap and more than up to the job.  The main reason people fit 4 pot calipers is to save weight and to help balance out the front / rear brake bias.

Oh, and you don't need vented discs - they add weight and the discs are exposed to plenty of airflow so cooling isn't really an issue.

Aye oop blatters J

Ive recently had hi spec fitted, very nice piece of kit, I have 280mm disks, in fact that’s the biggest ive seen under a 13 inch wheel (it a tight fit under there lol)

The stopping power is very good (my rears are sticking and affecting things at the moment) but on the few tests ive done on abandoned industrial estates they bite hard, and are very progressive, I can keep on the limit just before lock up.

Give mart a call at the kit car workshop if you want any details.

Nah na na nah nah

Westfield dont supply Bremsports anymore. They do an AP kit at £690.

I have gone for Hi-Spec on a combination of weight and performance.

CAT do some great ones with dust seals at an attractive price, and weight.

According to their web site, they're still doing the Bremsports........

Coat on and heading for whisky bottle      :D  :)

I was under the impression Westfield did their own branded calipers which I believe are rebranded Outlaw items. The supply of the Bremsports has all but dried up with no current sign to an end of the drought.

And Nick, you run Fluke discs, at least I hope you do as you exchanged your Citreon for a set :p

On the subject of brakes --

I'll soon be in need of replacement disks for standard Westfield parts. ???

I bought a couple of front disks (Cortina) from Andy at CAT (super service!;)), but shipping costs to the US were astounding!  :(

Can anyone suggest front and rear equivalents from cars that were imported to the US?

TIA   :D

Well I will as soon as the bl**** US customs muppets (no offence if you're reading this !!    :D  ) release the car from the customs clearance process !!

And I still think I got the better end of the deal !!  :p  :D
