O/T   wifi boosters/repeaters ?

Hi Guys,

anyone able to recommend a booster or repeater for home wifi ??

we have the std Sky SAGEM router - the flat one without external aerial...

I'm not sure what teh real merits of the booster vs repeater - repeater seems to make sense as we coudl put it 'half way' in the house to boost signal from the study where the router is located.

we have no easy way to piggy back another router to use as a secondary device.. at least hardwired.........

If anyone has succesfully done this and can advise pls do so  :D

Believe you can configure another wireless router to act as repeater.  Not done it meself but sure I read about it somewhere.

You need a router that supports WDS, unfortunately the SKY Sagem router doesnt.. and Sky dont want you changing your router (it can be done but some issues).

You really need to run a UTP cable from the Sagem to another Access Point (Most routers can also be configured as access points).

If you cant run a wire between the two, you could use a powerline adapter that lest you run ethernet over your mains cable...  something like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Comtren....31aa9f8  if you know anyone that got BT Vision these came free with the BT Vision box from BT and you might be able to blag a set..

All you have to do then us plug your Sagem into the Powerline adapter... and at the other side of the house plug a accesspoint into the other powerline adapter...

Downside of doing this is that you will effectively have two Wireless Networks.. which isnt really a big problem with most moderm PC's as they can switch automatically between both...

Phew hope that makes sense.. I am sure someone will come up with another way..

Google is your friend.  Here

This is explaining how to use a router as a wired repeaters - ie as a switch to overcome the 100m / 300 ft limit of a single Ethernet run.

There are devices which can be configured to act as wireless repeaters. However to support this extensions on the 802.11 standard specifically for repeating is required. Many cheap vendors don't support this.

Sure that was the one I'd read before - ah well sorry guys.

if it's just for your WIFI and not SKY TV I'd suggest using wireless homeplugs, I've got 3 dotted around my house and my internet connection is now excellent in every room in the house. They're also easy to move about if needed. :t-up:

is that like these

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=8881

so if i understand them correctly - you need at least two - one hard wired via lan cable to your existing router, and plugged in... and the other one just plugged in which 'repeats' or extends your range ?

I'm not sure whether these are better/worse than the amplifiers or repeaters out there - but good to know they work for someone - which model did you buy out of interest ??
