nik9669 Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 QUOTE make sure you drive the various types and make your own mind up, as they are quite different. I couldn’t get on with the variable valve timing on the Toyota engine I agree - try them out. But I do like the variable timing - I got the R cos of the extra performance at the top end. It doesn't kick in untill 6200 rpm, but you do feel the extra kick (well, enthusiastic nudge) in the back. But if you want to just cruise in a leisurely way, just change up at lower revs. I confess I didn't try the new 1.6 S version. It's supposed to match the outgoing 1.8 S, but I couldn't afford a new one so there seemed no point. I'm still intrigued to see what Lotus announce at Paris in September... Quote
lippydave Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 i've driven a boggo S1, which i quite liked, but may end up being pressured by SteveD into getting a honda conversion if i do get one...... probably not much pressure needed to be honest.... I wish I could have both - don't think a doberman will fit in an elise... OK, I'll pull the pin on this grenade I'm holding and lob it in..... Surely the Audi 1.8T conversion is a cheaper way to more toqrue and reliable horsepower than the Honda? A foaf had one with just over 300bhp and it seemed to go very well and was apparently a real on track waepon... Quote

Don’t get me wrong the R is great, I just preferred the gentler cam change with the K-Series…. but I do have to drive around permanently wondering when the head gasket is going to go!. September should be interesting. Quote

Is the Audi 1.8T engine not quite a bit heaver than the Honda? not sure I would want 300bhp in an Elise. Quote
lippydave Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Bespoke-Audi-conversions 40 kg weight increase...... A couple of good dumps (bran fibre) and a bunch of carbon-fibre goodies could help there... Audi-engined_Elise_forum Quote
SteveD Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 turbo lumps dont work that well in light cars seen many in sprinting etc and there not as quick as you think ,been there done it had big power vx220 ,its a big rush then nothing and if the turbo comes on boost mid corner its hello hedge or armco , i have also had a few supercharged honda elises the last one nearly 350 bhp and 235 ftlb of torques and its a far better power delivery than the turbo lumps and far easier to drive and remember the honda when fitted in the elise is around 8kg heavier the audi around 40kg than the standard car and also you will need to upgrade a few things , brakes pads and discs, callipers are more than up to it ,toe links, exhaust silencer (some times)and some sticky tyres, shocks ,and spring rates for the audi Quote
