][\/][ajor Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Getting my E65 730D back on Monday with a shiny new engine installed at BMW's expense after it ingested a swirl flap. Couple of questions? Do I need to run the new engine in or are they done at the factory? Would you believe that the service guy at BMW didn't know? As it's a nice new engine I want to remap it to get a bit more umph. Anyone chipped one of these before and should I wait until it's run in if I need to? Steve Quote
][\/][ajor Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 Who's best to carry it out or are they all pretty much the same? The guy who has the Superchips franchise in Hull lives around the corner but they seem a bit expensive to me. I'm thinking of taking it to the local independant BMW specialists as they've always been good to me and seem to know what they're doing. The only thing that's making me um and arr about using them is they don't have a rolling road. Do they need one to do it or is it a case that so many have been done now that they already know what to do with 'em? Steve Quote
JeffC Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Mate of mine does it mobile, he is based in Liecester area has a rolling road down there now, he has done 100"s of remaps for me and quite a few for members on here and will be cheaper than anyone else! he fitted a stage 3 map in my 335d which made 360bhp on the rollers! last 3.0d he did for me was impressive too. he is away on holiday this week but give him a call and mention my name Jamie is a cracking bloke http://www.sp-tuning.moonfruit.com/#/contact-us/4538661102 Quote

carpetstu Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I have been considering getting mine chipped. Let me know how you get on? What was the deal with the swirl flaps? Was it still under warranty? Just interested in case mine should ever have any similar issues! (I really hope it doesn't?) Quote
][\/][ajor Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 It turns out it's a really common fault on lots of BMW diesel engines. Fortunately mine was an approved used so BMW are covering all of the costs. I've been told the engine is approx £7K. In a nutshell there are some swirl flaps (like butterflies) which open and close as an when required in the inlet manifold. The b*******s snap their spindles and get sucked into the engine. They block the inlet valves open and then you get a nice big crunching noise as your piston hits them. All the gubbins then gets sent through the turbo and the cat to add insult to injury. A company called PMW do a set a blanks which look really simple to install. I think I'll be going down that route when the car's out of warranty. They apparently upgraded the spindles from 05 onwards. Keep your fingers crossed. See link for more info http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/swirl_flaps.pdf Quote
carpetstu Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Looks lie a few pounds need spending to save the potential of a few thousand being needed Quote
][\/][ajor Posted August 12, 2010 Author Posted August 12, 2010 Just an update. Got the car back with a new engine so was chuffed (but not with the oil ALL OVER the cream leather seats and door card) but with just a few miles up the road covered I knew something wasn't right. Had it straight back in and despite me asking them to check the turbo was OK whilst it was off, they said the turbo was kaput! I'd asked them to check it as I'd heard that it can suck the swirl flap spindle in and out through the turbo Back in the garage for a few more days for a new turbo. Also ended up with a new gearbox software upgrade whilst it was in as this didn't seem too clever either then buggar me, yesterday, the damn phone's stopped working Has anyone got a match? Quote
carpetstu Posted August 12, 2010 Posted August 12, 2010 My idrive occasionally turns off for a few minutes then resets ok.. I think it gets to hot. TBf the car does some strange things on occassion but it goes woooooooffffff without the match so I forgive it Quote
