Bananaman Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 Had a play with my Westy Yesterday, had to jump start it as battery was flat. When i came back (after 10 mins of freezing FUN) i stopped the car & opend the garage door got back in the Car and Battery was still flat so had to push the car in . I've put the battery on charge but how long do i leave it for Also the Red light on the dash was on, does this meen that the alternater is F***ed? Andy Quote
Mark Stanton Posted December 22, 2002 Posted December 22, 2002 Is it one of those low maintenance sealed jelly filled batteries Cos unless they're used regularly they do lose their charge and never seem to re-charge fully - if you charger has a tester check it - should be best to have it on charge for 12 to 24 hours, but again depends on charger. Try fully charged battery first - if red light still on ...... then maybe amend your present list to Santa Quote

Bananaman Posted December 22, 2002 Author Posted December 22, 2002 Cheers I will go & test the Voltage tomorrow. Andy P.S. Battery is small (like a large motorcycle job, with a Red top & 6 screw off plugs over the cells. Quote
hilux Posted December 23, 2002 Posted December 23, 2002 test battery across terminals - should be 12+ volts, if not probably a dud cell and battery is f****d test alternator under load, ie with lights on - should be 13.5 volts+, if not or below 12 volts its f****d if red light is coming on assuming earthing is cool then alternator is defo f****d get a battery condition trickle charger or remove leads when not in use Quote
chazpowerslide Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 I use "Optimate" chargers for my bikes and cars, you can leave them connected and "on" all the time and the charger monitors the state of charge of the battery for you. The Optimate will recover deeply discharged batteries in about 36 hours, I have four of them for about 3 years and have never had a flat battery on one of my cars or bikes after months of storage. The battery from my ZZR1100 has been on an Optimate for three years now and still is as good as new. Optimate chargers are available from most good motorcycle shops. Chaz. Quote
JamesD Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 I 2nd the Optimate's, use one on a vehicle that is garaged for long periods of time, it has in the past cost me £350 for new batteries!! If you are thinking of getting an Optimate Charger hold off for a few days, I am just trying to organise a deal for a bulk purchase. I was going to rally some interest shorlty Keep your eye on the For Sale section with details of prices etc... Regards, James Quote
Blatman Posted December 24, 2002 Posted December 24, 2002 James Count me in on the bulk purchase, BUT, put a notification somewhere else, not just in the for sale section............. Quote
