OTT - Motorhome - Cheap deal but...

Hi all,

Apologies for the OTT but I wondered if anyone had any experience or suggestions based upon experience.

I bought a Motorhome (Ford (Autosleepers) Duetto) as a bit of a larf to see if me and my social secretary like it. If we do we`ll trade up in the close season.

I got it for a song but its had some muppet sling diesel in the water tank.

I think its a new tank required but what about the pipes and taps etc I would have thought that if flushed with a degreaser and then chlorinated it would be ok or am I trying to avoid the inevitable?

Any suggestions as to what may remove the diesel. I`ve looked it up and there`s suggestions ranging from Milton sterilising tablets to dishwasher detergent.

Is there an `industrial` cleaner out there?

Thanks if you have time to reply.

You really should get a new tank at least, pipes etc do a google for CAK tanks in Nuneaton they supply all kinds of water tanks, taps, pipes and everything you need.

Don't use dishwasher detergent, Milton is o.k and you can also buy some sterilising powder which you can put through system.

Try new tank first and a flush out (or three) but don't be surprised if you also end up changing pipework and check your water pumps and water heater cos diesel may have also got though to that    :(  they all feed off main fresh water tank supply

you shouldn't laugh but

sorry

Has the diesel been pumped through the taps/shower etc if not i would replace the tank and pipework up to the water pump.

If it has been pumped through i would be tempted to change all the taps & pipe work. Also take the water tank off the water heater and give it a good clean. (i would use clutch n brake cleaner as it evaporates then washing up liquid and a good rinse) oleary motorhomes is a good spot to get taps etc

Thanks for the response/help.

Its a plastic tank so will have absorbed the diesel so a new one is required.

I dont think its too bad a scenario (thankfully)

I found out today that I can get the correct tank from Autosleepers who can supply me with the tank, new filler cap (the filler throat diameter is now bigger), all the hoses to and from the tank delivered for about £100

I will remove the pump and see what its like. If diesel has got to it the seals will be toast but if there was water in the tank and the pump hasnt been run since then the diesel floats on the top so the pump shouldnt have been contaminated.

If it is then a new one will be needed and a couple of hoses to the taps and shower.

I might fit a 12v high volume in line fuel pump instead. If it happened again then the pump wouldnt be affected.

I consider that the water heater (metal) can be chlorinated as can the taps so it may only be a couple of hundred quid. If it still tasts odd then an in line carbon filter (apparently) will sort the last vestiges of any odour.

Ho hum....................

I`ll report back soon, thanks once again, useful info as usual.

I had a cracked tap on my motorhome :(

new one from the dealer £98 and its made of chrome coated plastic ???  ???

Local plumbers merchant £43 for a ceramic disc mixer tap, its a litte heavier, maybe 1 kg but much better quality :D  :D  Job done

So dont just look at the dealers / parts suppliers.
