Brucester70 Posted October 31, 2002 Posted October 31, 2002 Without me taking out my Smiths Tachometer, could anyone tell me if there are any switches on the back to change the input, as it is reading 4k at 2.5k and 7k at 4k! It was new when I bought the car, help! Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted October 31, 2002 Posted October 31, 2002 I have my dash board in the spare room at the moment. I'll have a look when I get home Quote
stu999 Posted October 31, 2002 Posted October 31, 2002 Yes there is mate, IIRC there is four small switches underneath a rubber grommet on the back of the clock. Have you still got the destructions for it? Quote
Brucester70 Posted November 1, 2002 Author Posted November 1, 2002 unfortunately not as it was installed at Terry Nightingales when I bought the car. Any ideas on what they should be set to when I have a VX ? Quote
stu999 Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 It depends on what ignition is fitted, and where the rev counter pickup is from. The input to the rev counter is different from say, an MBE ignition system, and a standard VX jobbie which is likely to be picked up from the coil as opposed to the ECU. Once you have identified the type you have, give either Westfield or Smiths gauges a ring, because my mate cant find his destructions either and I cant remember! HTH (a little bit) Stu. Quote
Brucester70 Posted November 1, 2002 Author Posted November 1, 2002 did your mate have any of the same problems then? Quote
stu999 Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 Oh yes. Where shall I start? All wiring complete, battery connected for the first time.....and all the 'small' gauges went to maximum! After lots of faffing about, checking and double checking, we eventually found that the factory supplied loom is not compatable with the clocks without modification. Then we started the engine for the first time, and had the same problem as yourself with the rev-counter. IIRC there are also a couple of different wiring options with the rev counter too, depending on where it gets its pickup from. I rang the Smiths factory to get the correct wiring, before we started the engine. But the MBE is a wasted spark system, and I think (cant remember for sure-slept since then! we had to 'tell' the rev counter that the engine was an 8 cylinder to get accurate readings. The only thing which went smoothly was the speedo, which worked perfectly first time, unlike other poor folk on this forum who seem to be having trouble getting it to work. But IMO they are far nicer guages than VDO's, and once the problems had been ironed out have performed faultlessly for the few miles he has done in the car. It sounds like the wiring will be correct on your car; probably just been inadvertantly set incorrectly. Good luck, let us know how you get on..... Stu. Quote
McSpreader Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 I too found the same problems - but found the Smiths web page very usefull. However, don't even ask for the link as I cannot remember - just have a search. It has some very usefull tech info. Si Quote
Blatman Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 Smiths instruments can be found here. It seems a company called Caerbont hold the production rights. It also seems from the e-mail address that they may have also taken over from Speedy Cables............ Quote
Brucester70 Posted December 24, 2002 Author Posted December 24, 2002 I found the switches and tried setting it to 8 Cylinder but that didn't work and was well under. Tried 6 Cylinder and seemed fairly accurate, perhaps slightly under but a decent improvement. Cheers and Merry Xmas to you all Quote
