hilux Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 In the process of stripping my car down I have discovered that the builder of the car had simply left a piece of hose protruding as a diff vent. 1) is this correct or is there a one way valve missing. 2) I would have thought that if it is a hose then it should be bent downwards to below the diff so as to airlock if under water 3) As you can see here there is a slight weeping/leaking from the pipe, Is this normal? Thanks in advance for any advice Hilux Quote
Mike H Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 It looks pretty standard to me - or should I say my old car with all factory supplied bits just had a short pipe for venting too. The short pipe was attached to a hard plastic section which has to be tapped (as in with hammer) into the vent hole on the diff. I guess there's no reasin why you can't fit a longer pipe if you want. I think on the Sierra the pipe just disappears up into a rear subframe section and that's it, there's no valve at all. cheers Mike Quote
furtive Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 I have a longer pipe that is cable-tied up into one of the wheel arches - thus spraying it with diff oil on fast lefthand corners. I keep meaning to make a catch-tank out of an old coke can, but haven't got round to it yet. Quote
Terry Everall Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 It is exactly like mine and I have not had problems - so IO suggest leave it alone Quote
waynem Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 My LSD from donor has its breather pipe snapped off. Are breather pipe parts available from, say Ford, or can you use any old pipe that will wedge into the hole ?? What have other people used for their breather pipes ? Cheers Quote
hilux Posted December 21, 2002 Author Posted December 21, 2002 Okey dokey I think a longer pipe is in order to deflect the `spray` away. Cheers chaps Quote
Mark Stanton Posted December 21, 2002 Posted December 21, 2002 Longer pipe will be fine and help you with the "spray" - just make sure you take it up and keep it above diff height - or it might drain, rather than vent it Quote

The vent was snapped off on my LSD as well, I got a replacement from Ford. The Ford part number for this vent is "6725173" and was £0.89 + VAT it comes with a short length of hose (85mm long). Quote
