Tiger_DFT Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Hi from "Down Under"!!, Thought maybe I might get some good advice for starting (cold) tyre(tire!) pressures for my 195x60R14"86H DZ03G(s) tyres I have just had fitted. The tyre dealer said I should run them at 36 psi HOT. This seems high to me as I have been running the original tyres at 21 cold psi!! All help / advice greatly appreciated. I am setting up my Westfield as a "Track day/Hillclimb" car. It has a Toyota 4age16v with a T50. It weighs 545kgs. I have retired my Sunbeam Tiger to a road only car....it was fun but I'm sure the Westfield will be more fun!! Cheers David Tweddle Perth, Western Australia. Quote
peterg Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 36psi start at 18psi (cold) and experiment but I wouldn't go lower than 16 or higher than 22 Quote
leighc Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 36psi I bet you struggle to keep all four wheels on the ground with that pressure it must be awful to drive Quote
Tiger_DFT Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 Hmmm....my suspicions confirmed. I have only driven it onto my car trailer and it didn't feel good!! 1st drive in anger is Sunday week (Track Day). I'll start out at 19psi cold..... Do any of you use the old 4psi rule? If hot tyre pressure increases > 4 psi then starting cold pressure too low. If hot tyre pressure increases < 4psi then cold pressure too high. Anyway.....I'll see how it feels. Cheers and thanks for your suggestions....my thoughts confirmed!! David Tweddle Quote
RedditchJay Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 normally the pressure does increase with heat.... I run my toyo's at 16psi cold and have checked when hot reaching just over 21psi Quote
Guest Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Hi David You are in my neck of the woods. I'm in Sawyers Valley. For the road I run 20 psi For the track I start out cold at 16 psi Tyre guys always are thinking of heavy family hacks and forget that a westy is so light. It is hard enough to generate heat into the tyres on one of these cars without running the things at 36psi. Must have felt lovely (not) at that pressure. Regards Greg Quote
Tiger_DFT Posted July 9, 2010 Author Posted July 9, 2010 Hi Greg, Yes, I did a double take when Stuart Kostera said 36psi so I double checked him!! He knew it was a Westfield as we were kneeling next to the car sorting out wheelnuts!! I was most impressed with Kosteras tyre fitters using a wheel brace to remove wheels and a torque wrench to tighten wheels....not a rattle gun in sight. I even got a cup of tea!! I spend 50% of my time in Perth (Applecross) and 50% down in Busselton....where I am now. Any time you head down this way.....call in if you would like to talk cars etc!! Cheers David Quote
Guest Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Hi David Kostera's are usually pretty good but they have definately got the pressures wrong with yours. We have a club in Perth and often go on runs etc. PM me an email address and I will let you know if something is on if you like and if you are up your welcome to come along. Regards Greg Quote
Tiger_DFT Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 Well I had fun!! The day was an "arrive and drive" day at Collie.....it is a great little country track. The idea was to get kids off the street and introduce them to a racetrack...day was a great success. The car went really well....especially once I let the tyres down another 4 psi!! Very impressed indeed with the Dunlops. I managed to make a silly mistake spinning out due to a large unseen puddle....but I behaved myself after that. My son seen in the car drove it well also....think I may have to pull a plug lead off! My swirl pot worked a treat, brakes were good....but will need better pads. Having harder pads may also improve brake balance as I felt too much front and not enough rear stopping happening.. All in all.....very glad I bought this fun little car. [Greg I am unable to PM you (??) so yes here is my email address ... I would love to hear from you whenever anything is on....I do spend a bit of time down south so maybe may miss a run if I can't avoid it! davidandvarley@hotmail.com Cheers David Tweddle ps....Stuart Kostera did very well in the Bathurst 6 hour enduro...1st place in a Evo 11 or 12 or 15 or whatever.
