Went to the local  Vintage car show last weekend, its held every year at the Lancaster museum Here in Nanton, havn't got there before always working. Anyway, managed to make it this year. Got talking to the organizer and he took an interest in my car, then he says, why dont you put her in with the other cars, and then parked me right next to a vintage Roly poly. Did I have a good day or what

Nice pictures Steve! Indeed looks like a brilliant day out. Did I see a Avro Lancaster on one of the pictures? Is it operational? Mighty machines.

Just got back from Hamilton and enjoyed a flight in the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster. They take up 4 at a time and you have to wear ear protectors as the engines are very loud. After take off you can move around the aircraft and go into the cockpit, observers dome and mid upper turret. We went over the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls and I took some stunning photos. Definitely the best 2 grand I have ever spent.

'Er indoors' dad was in the RAF during the war and immediate post war, as a maintenance supervisor his log book indicates he flew hundreds of test flights in an incredible variety of types following major repairs

Fast forward to a few years ago, struck down with Vascular Dementia (a series of small strokes) he required full time care and was looked after in a home near Boston. One fine day we visited and took him out for the day, passing East Kirby by accident we stopped and explored the museum finding the Lancaster on the apron. He had become more animated as the tour went on but when the Merlins were started for one of its regular taxi runs he became excited, alert and for the first time for months tried to talk (his speech centre was one of the first things to go). It was also the last time, he died a few weeks later.

Sorting through his possessions was pretty sobering, I found his log books, containing laconic understated references to being shot at, quite often by friendlies. Post war photograph albums with him pictured in Germany with such aviation greats (prisoners) as Hannah Reitsch. In all the years I knew him he NEVER mentioned the war.

PS, a ride in a Lancaster would be mind blowing but not as mind blowing as my second best aviation experience, a ride in a two seat Spitfire! What was the best you ask?, a ride in a two seat Hunter!

Lovely tale that , I'm sure he passed away and took some great memories with him

A friends dad was in 617 squad (navigator ) and would never talk about his war years

I had an Uncle who was in the Chindits , that to was never mentioned , the only reference I ever saw was a photo of him in uniform on Gran's sideboard  :t-up:

There were a lot of very modest hero's around,  most thought little of what they had done and rarely mention there abscent comrades , without there sacrifice we wouldnt be here today  :t-up:

The spitfires and Lancasters etc . should be kept going as a living memorial to the guys

We should never forget the debt we owe to them  :t-up:

My Dad always said there was no Glory in War, he to wouldn't talk about all the he had to go through.  Great story about your wifes Dad. God bless him. Fly the Flag and be proud.
