V8grunt Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Reminded me of an holiday in Crete some years back.... Staying on the same complex was a guy who worked for Pratt & Whitney... Told us they used to run the engines up to 110% a 100 times and if there was a blip the engine was pulled out and stripped and checked! He also told us that on occasion it wasn't unknown for someone to go outside with a blue brick and toss it in to the exhaust chute which faced upwards....and watch the blue brick disappear in to the sky....never to be seen again ( possibly felt tho!) MGF255 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 What a great programme , interesting to see the machining tolerances they work to and the casting process . Also I found the insight into after service to be very impressive - good to know the engines are being monitored (almost in real time) by the manufacturer whilst in service . Quote
barney Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 QUOTE engine failure at 30 000 feet maybe focusses the mind. just a bit... great advert for british engineering.. Quote
wizzer Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 RB211 stands for Rolls Barnoldswick 2/11/?? It was designed at barnoldswick and I think it was the first engine with fan blades and the trent engine has been developed from that, Quote

Mark19800_0 Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Great to see people passionate and fulfilled in their jobs too With a pride in their work. I sit here and look around me . . . . That was something I noticed too, whether this was the result of editing or they really were all so professional I don't know. Those who spoke were correctly customer focussed which I guess is down to company policy and training. I have been involved with the other major manufacturer in Derby, Bombardier, and though you doo see some of the same committment from some of the assembly staff, there were others who had, shall I say, lees than serious vie wof what they were doing. But I guess some of RR guys/girls fly and an engine failure at 30 000 feet maybe focusses the mind. All Engines are further tested during Aircraft Flight testing during production and during the customer acceptance during delivery. (Engine Run and Flight Test) One customer once told me that they have a problem with the thrust reversers on their A/C and in order to open them, they would open one side and persuade the other to open using a baggage carrier. So If the manufacturer is being conscientious about safety and testing, its not always the case with the airlines..! Quote
