I know its not topical but No.1 daughter in need of replacement transport , has 2 youngstrs 6 and 8 yrs old , does usual school run , weekly shop, and odd trips to see grandad's etc.

Budget is £4K but need to know the best buy , not worried about having great performance but would have decent roadholding and needs to be cheapish  to run reasonable swervice costs etc .

so far been looking at

Citroen z picasso or pug equivalent

Renault

Vauxhall Zafira

Focus estate

Vectra estate

Any advice encouraged

TIA

SWMBO has a Renault Scenic 1.5dci, 2004 with 32k miles.

Reason purchased is ENCAP safety record, 1.5dci economy and 3 proper rear seats.

Only problem in the last 2 years is a rear window regulator failure.

Car used daily for school run and SWMBO work.

MPV's drive more like a van than a car and are more expensive to buy/ run than an equivalent estate.

They do allow you to sit slightly higher though.

Have had 2 Zafira's in succession, but am more likely to be buying estates in future.

Bought - from trade - a nearby VW passat 54 plate in GC for under £4000 recently.

We've got a 14 year old Peugeot 806 2 litre petrol. I've had to replace the head gasket and took the opportunity to change the clutch and all the belts.

It's totally reliable and fuel consumption is around 30 mpg.

It's now been relegated to a builders van and that works a treat.

Why an MPV? For the budget a pretty decent Mondeo / Vectra / Focus / Astra is on the cards, as well as any number of European / Japanese / Korean equivalents. Mondeo / Vectra will have a bigger boots and better road holding than any tall MPV...

Mazda 5 SWMBO has one swears by it unlike Zafira which she swore at repeatedly!

You'd get more than an eye blackened matey

For some reason girls love a high riding position and who am I to discourage there natural instincts .

I personally believe its something to do with being able to see into shop windows better and also see what other women are wearing while alongside at the traffic lights .

Common sense tells me an estate car is the way to go, my own Mondeo Estate has s**t loads of room and been mega reliable and cheap to run so she may end up with one or even a smaller (more economical) Focus or Astra type .

Ruling out Froggy stuff , they seem to have a reputation for visting the dealers to often .

As always buying second hand will have to see what the market throws up

Thanks for the input

did 17 years in the motor trade +kids/grandparents/airport runs/dogs etc so had the full montage of mpv's through my hands at some point, french stuff breaks, zafira surprisinly ok depending on engine choice, voyager's just don't,honda shuttle was superb,c-max excellent but prob outside budget, subaru legacy estate would defo be worth a look whilst not an mpv i have put mega miles/abuse on several and only ever cost consumables!all imho of course-hope this helps.

SWMBO has just had a cmax and I must say I'm quite impressed with the ride quality and handling. Also it feels much bigger than it actually is plus the little one loves the higher up posision and the tray thats on the back of the front seats.

maybe not for the money but we have found the Honda frv an excellent choice - very practical for its size and the kids love the middle front seat when we let them
