Norman Verona
The local fish & chip shop man has a 10 year old P38 Range Rover 2.5 DSL. He says it will not start when hot (maybe when cold as well) and thinks there's a "hot start kit" which bypasses the computer and allows it to start. It was all a bit jumbled (maybe battered like his fish). Anyone know what he's talking about and what's required? Thanks.

simon besant
i looked at one of these would start fine when cold but when hot you had to crank it over for about twenty or so seconds before it would start. Was told it was ecu fault about six hundred pounds to fix. I had checked everything but inside the battery was very black the battery drop test was fine but as we were working it so hard we changed the battery just to be safe. It cured the hot start problem not saying it will but if anyone has a battery he can borrow to try might be worth it
Norman Verona
Simon, it seems to be a very common fault which the ebay kit cures by kidding the computer that the engine is cold and therefore using the glow plugs to start even when hot. I bought HM a 2.5DSE some years ago and amongst a lot of other problems the engine would cut out at the most inconvinient time becasue the computer thought the transmission had siezed. The dealer was worse than useless and did all sorts to cure including change the battery because they'd "heard" that low voltage could cause the problem. Eventually I got onto the factory who told me to reset the computer as it was a programe error due to two very different styles of driving having been learnt by the computer. The car was 2 years old, we kept it for 12 months, it had to be recovered 14 times and in the end she wouldn't drive it. I couldn't blame her so it cost me £12,000 for 1 years total aggrevation. lippydave
Norm, as a big Land Rover fan, I would advise anyone to avoid P38 generation RR's unless you have the patience of a saint and the budget of Paris Hilton.... The computer reset thing does work well on certain cars IME tho, especially Merc's with "learning " autoboxes. Wifey's s/hand ML had some strange change points on the auto box when we first bought it...Disconnecting the battery for a day and letting it "forget", the gearbox "re-learned" the shift points to suit new drivers style....Also did the same thing on an older C43 and a C280 and it worked well too..... PS, Everytime I read one of your posts I'm sat at the computer humming "de,de,de,de,de,de Norm-Verona" to the tune of "My Sharona".... Ah, the Brits know how to build a quality car then! No wonder there are no large volume British manufacturers any more. We are s**t at it! What ever happened to Red Robbo of BL fame? Norman Verona
Dave, nice to kniow I make someone smile... Bob, I know something about Red Robbo. he destroyed our car manufacturing in the midlands single handed. Long story short - We supplied and installed the automatic conveyer car wash at the end of the Metro line. I went to inspect the finished article, which BLMC had increaeed the price by a factor of 10 for their spec against our spec. I was with the director of works at the end of the line waiting for a car to come through. I noticed a group of men sitting at a table drinking tea and playing cards. Eventually a car came through. The director explained that if it had a yellow cross on the screen it would be taken left to the paint rectification bays if not then straight on for the side stripes and on to the waxing unit. One of the chaps playing cards put his hand down arose and put the side stripes on then resumed playing cards. It took him all of 45 seconds. so I ask why there are 1,2,3,4....8,9 chaps sitting around the table. "The union negotiated that it took 3 men to apply the stripes". But, I questioned, "why are there 9 men?" "there are 3 types of stripe" And that, Bob, is why we have no car manufacturing base in the country. The computer problem with the P38 should have been cured in minutes by the dealer, in fact the system should have been reset before selling the car. Everything wrong with that car was, in some way or another, down to dealer incompetence.

How did we let these brainless b*****ds rule our manufacturing of what could possibly have been world class engineering? I feel a dump coming on! Norman Verona
Bob, it was weak management that allowed it to happen. Thatcher came along and sorted the unions but it wasn't her (or any politicians) job, it was the bosses.

Blatman
Was Norm banned then? I may have missed that during one of my sabbaticals during the late noughties? Someone spill the beans...
