jezmilligan Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 My Westie (SEIW, 1,8 zetec, Mt75 G/box, Sierra 4x4 LSD) makes nasty loud squeaking noises when reversing round corners (v. embarrasing when parallel parking). Its fine when going forward. Would this be the LSD? What can I do about it? Thanks. Jez. Quote
Blatman Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 I doubt it's the LSD, but we'd need more info..... Live axle or independent, drum brakes or discs? Is there any way of narrowing down where the sound is coming from, or is it just a loud screeching noise? Does it do it in any other gear, particularly first, when the car is cold? Does the nosie rise and fall with revs, or is it wheel speed/movement related? Does the noise go away if you dip the clutch even though you are still moving? Does it do it reversing both left and right, or only one way? Are there tyre marks on the body where the front tyre rubs on full lock.............. Quote
jezmilligan Posted November 25, 2002 Author Posted November 25, 2002 it's independant with discs all round. The noise is dependant on the turning of the rear wheels and occurrs when the car is pushed back with engine off. It doesnt sound like a brake noise - more a creaking from the back axle which made me think it may be LSD, and it's just when the car turns in a tight arc backwards. bl**** awful noise it is. Quote
Blatman Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Both directions, or when turning either left or right only? If it occurs only when pushing, I'd look at brake pads, and the cleanliness thereof, wheel bearings, and possibly a suspension or rose joint problem...........or is it the bodywork creaking as you put pressure the roll bar (or whatever you use to push the car)......... .....tight arc backwards...... Have you checked that the front tyres aren't fouling the bodywork, or anything else, on full lock? Quote
jezmilligan Posted November 26, 2002 Author Posted November 26, 2002 It's definitely not bodywork. It happens both left and right whether pushing or driving, but only on a tight turn. I'll check the brakes, but I doubt it's that as it only happens in reverse. It sounds more like the axle doesnt want to make the arc, which is why I thought it may be the diff. It's fine apart from that so I may just take it to a meet after winter and ask advice. Quote
Neil Purdie Posted November 27, 2002 Posted November 27, 2002 Are the rear suspension springs rubbing against the body of the shocks, the spring bows in the middle. This was causing high pitch squeaks on mine, but mainly low speed bumpy roads ( my driveway, spax shocks/long springs ) Quote
