][\/][ajor Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Had my car in at Z cars today having a bit of welding done to the stainless steel exhaust (good guys) and ended up talking to Chris the owner about my doubts that my car has an LSD diff. I've read various threads on how to confirm this and never been truly sure. Chris said he'd tell me for certain. Jacked the back end up, put it in gear, I held one wheel solid and he tried to turn the opposite wheel which he could with a bit of effort. Hey presto! LSD fitted! He thinks it's a viscous type so I can now sleep peacefully thanks to Chris at Z cars. A top bloke as far as I'm concerned. Make sure the car's in gear 'cos if it's not, you'll be able to turn the opposite wheel and think it's not and LSD. Quote
adamnreeves Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 just jack up and turn one wheel and if the other wheel goes in the same direction its LSD. If it turns the opposite direction then its not. Quote

If I jack mine up out of gear and turn one wheel the other turns the opposite way which is what made me doubt the presence of an LSD. Obviously this test isn't the way forward. Quote
pistonbroke Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 one wheel goes th' opposite way on a plate type diff , viscous diff is erm "different" Quote

By putting it in gear the prop is ALMOST locked down and by holding one other wheel solid where can the drive go to ? Probably in this instance the prop was turning the engine over and naturally that would give some resistance. Or think of it like this if the prop is locked and one wheel is locked then the free wheel will also be locked. If its a visc lsd by putting it in gear and turning 1 wheel the other will turn in the opposite direction BUT there will be much resistance to do that. If you do the same test in neutral than both wheel are LIKELY to turn in the same direction but this is a less fool proof method. Quote
Bob Green Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Just give it the big one in first gear and count the black lines on the tarmac. 1 black line - no LSD 2 black lines - LSD Simples. Quote
