waynem Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Are the standard studs in Cortina front hub studs long enough or will I need to wrestle them out and replace with longer ?? If they need to come out, do they just push or are they screwed out (using two nut technique ) ?? Ta Quote
peterg Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 er, that rather depends on what wheels you're going to fit but assuming they'll be aftermarket alloys then they won't be long enough - best give Andy @ CAT Motorsport a ring as a)he'll know what you need b)he can sell you the right ones and c)he's a nice bloke If they need to come out you probably won't be able to push them yourself, take them to a local engineering firm with a bench press and ask them to do it - probably take about 30 minutes max and cost you a tenner at most! Buzzer Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 I am sure you should be able to tap the studs them out with a hammer. As you are replacing them you don't need to worry too much about damaging the threads. In most cars a few sharp taps will push the studs back. The new ones will just push in from the rear, pull them up with a nut and a spacer ( piece of tube or larger nut).. job done! Quote
ACW Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 yep a good firm tap with a hammer will move them out no probs. Rarely need pressing out. dont forget depending on the length of your new studs you may need to put them in before you fit the discs. Quote
JamesD Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Merlin motorsport also supply hub studs (cheers blatters ) , they can be contacted on 01249782101. I went for M12*1.5 and 2 3/8" long, bear in mind you will not be able to get these in unless you dismantle the hub from the upright (quite an easy process)...the b*******s are just that little bit too long Quote
Fastboy Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Currently doing this job. Easy peasy but you will need to remove the hub as there isnt enough clearance to get them out (well not on mine anyway)and personally I feel its better done on a bench as you will probably need to give the studs a good nunney (see I'm learning the techy words) with a copper hammer. Wouldnt advise a normal hammer. Undo two caliper mounting bolts. (Bend retaining washers back first !!! Remove caliper and support on brick etc. Prise dust cover off stub axle thingy. Remove cotter pin. Remove locking washer remove hub nut. remove tab washer. hub will slide out. Careful the taper roller bearing inner dosent fall out onto *****y garage floor. (Best remove for safe keeping) place on bench and undo 4 bolts holding disc on (bending tabs back first) remove disc. warm hub with suitable appliance (not too hot) Then pretend they are your old maths teacher and give them the good news. Put new studs in (I used a dab of 242 loctite) and refitt. Job done. Oh yes.... Take wheels off first (much easier !!!!!! Tech advice from me ............ scary Quote
waynem Posted November 27, 2002 Author Posted November 27, 2002 Got hub off upright and onto garage floor (protected with several newspapers.... Squirt of plus gas.Out comes the hammer. Bish Bosh bash!!! Jobs a good `un. I do like hammers!!! Cheers Quote
