peterpeter Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 Just fitting an RAC roll bar and noticed that the petrol tank looks a bit naff. .In a rear ender its going to go pop.. .Anyone changed theirs for a more impact resistant design or material??? Quote
stu999 Posted November 16, 2002 Posted November 16, 2002 You could have a foam filled tank made, which instead of going pop and fuel exploding everywhere...will just leak rapidly instead. Or you could have a flexible fuel cell from the likes of ATL (IIRC). But they are big money. At the end of the day, it is a risk, but thnk about motorcyclists. They have their family allowance resting against the tank.... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 17, 2002 Posted November 17, 2002 I've seen a couple of Westfields with a rear shunt - one of em hit by a Taxi What appeared to happen was the spare wheel support was pushed up into the tank and punctured it ouch. As to being engulfed in flames - it didn't happen, they both merely dribbled fuel out until the level dropped below the hole. You need some serious heat to light fuel and there isn't too much at the rear of a Westfield. Quote
Rob Navin Posted November 17, 2002 Posted November 17, 2002 I tried to break my alloy one from Westfield when I went backwards into some crash barrier The tank was well bent at the end of the ride but staid together and leak free. Quote
peterg Posted November 17, 2002 Posted November 17, 2002 What appeared to happen was the spare wheel support was pushed up into the tank so another good reason not to carry a spare Quote
Fast Westie Posted November 18, 2002 Posted November 18, 2002 I've got a foam filled custom made one mounted above the diff Quote
peterpeter Posted November 19, 2002 Author Posted November 19, 2002 how mucj is a foam filled tank??? Quote
neilb Posted November 20, 2002 Posted November 20, 2002 You need some serious heat to light fuel Petrol is very hard to light with just heat, you need a flame or a spark generally. So if you are going to get hit form behind make sure that you don't drop your fag Read into that what you will Neil Quote
stu999 Posted November 22, 2002 Posted November 22, 2002 Hehehehe.... Today I have just received the new DT catalogue.... The aluminium container to hold a c******m 55 litre tank is 375 quid. And the flexible fuel cell to go inside it is..... . . . . . . wait for it.... . . . . . I will write it in words..... . . . . ONE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY TWO POUNDS, FIFTY PENCE!!!!! And neither price includes VAT... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 23, 2002 Posted November 23, 2002 What a bargain - that'll have cateringvan owners breaking down the doors to buy em Quote
george Posted November 23, 2002 Posted November 23, 2002 JAZ sells an 8 gallon fuel cell that includes a foam-filled poly bladder inside a steel case. It measures 20 1/2" x 15 1/4" x 8 1/2" high and has feed and vent fittings (AN-8) on the top. It can be shoehorned into the Westfield rear end and, when finally slid past the car's plastic body shell, gives reasonable room for mounting, collision crush, etc. The cell is available from Summit (www.summitracing.com) as part number SUM-290115 for US $150 (a bit less than 100#) plus shipping. I've done it and now use my odometer as a fuel guage. The issue of igniting the fuel in a collision is what has kept me from relocating my battery to the rear. I hope this helps. Quote
