waynem Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Looking for some sealant/adhesive to use when riveting panels to chassis. Any cheap/good solutions that may be found at B+Q or on the net ?? Also, how many tubes (approx) are needed for fixing all the panels to chassis ? Cheers Quote
CateringVan Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Dont use general household sealants from B&Q etc. They give off acidic fumes which will corrode steel and alloy after a time. Go to an automotive paint supplier (any local car bodyshop will know where the nearest one is) and get some proper automotive silicone sealer. Quote
Blatman Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Use a proper automotive sealant, rather than a bathroom sealant. I believe the anti fungus/ant mould additives in bathroom sealant attack metal/aluminium, so they're to be avoided. Quote
Blatman Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Nice. Two Blatchatters in perfect harmony Quote
Mike H Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 NF Autos do a suitable sealant/adhesive they advertise in the kit magazines (NF Auto). I got mine from a local car panel/paint shop. Slightly more difficult to apply in that it's harder to squeeze out of the tube but as a result sticks much better. Usually comes in black. I would get 3 tubes for starters (I presume you've already got a gun). As it's black you can also use to to seal up any bits where you think the powder coating didn't quite get into. cheers Mike Quote

windy Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 Used unibond black waterproof sealant on my car 7 years ago (bought from B&Q). Having struggled to remove one of the panels during winter rebuild there was no corrosion whatsoever. Seal has obviously lasted (contrary to other people's advice). Note: The bond is only as strong as the powder coating it is stuck to so if you use the automotive stuff (designed to hold door skins to frames etc) you'll never be able to remove panels again.
