If it says kit built on the reg document and it was registered prior to SVA coming into force (July 1998) then all it needs is a visible smoke test. There is a thread over on the dark side about it, which includes the mot testers manual section you will need to quote (August 2001 edition section 6.4 page 5c on the bottom right hand side of the flow charts ). Take your reg docs along to prove it was kit built.

If it was SVA'd but kit built then you used to be able to get away with a smoke test but they have recently tightened up the rules and you now have to meet the emissions limits it passed the first time around. (see another thread over on the dark side)

If it was factory built but pre-sva the same thing applies, ie it will have a set of emissions limits to reach and they will be in the testers handbooks.

Having said that a lot of mot people see the car, think its a kit and just do the smoke test anyway so you may get away with it.
