basicly looking to buy 1.8/2.0 16v westie asap, i have only ever owned 1 ford which was an XR2 (about 10 years ago), driving to work this morning noticed a nice j reg saph cossie nice apart from all the blue smoke from its exhaust and i must admit the majority of smokey cars i see are fords, i  by no means claim to be a mechanic but it made me think are the newer zetec engines also like this or is it just that people are to lazy to have the oil changed reguarly ?? - the last thing i want is a nice lookin westie with a load of blue smoke coming out of it everytime i bury the loud pedal !! should i buy ford or vaux 16v or is it all just down to maintenance ?? by the way currently got a 16v astra sport but i am not bias just want a good westie with 16v power !! tia for advice !!

Smokiest Ford engines are usually X-flows  ;)  the Pinto was a bit better and the Zetecs don't smoke at all (IMHO) unless there's something wrong with them like being overfilled with oil or knackered rings etc......

...and to balance the Ford bit, older (ie. mk1) Astra (and Cavalier etc.) engines used to b******* their valve guides and smoke like crazy after not too much mileage, I know I had one  ???

Power wise the 2.0L 16v Zetec cannot match the 2.0L 16v Vauxhall XE. There is great debate on this forum about the relative merits of both engines, my advice would be to conduct a search!

Overall both engines generally a reliable choice for the Westfield, parts are proliferous....but the Zetec has the edge on cost 2nd hand and there are more about. Use this forum and speak to the independant experts, i.e. Dunnell Engines, SDB, Raceline..and you can make an informed decision from there.

Best of luck...

P.S You don't need to be a mechanical mastermind to get on with a build, I am suprised how much knowledge I have picked up!

Regards

JD ;)

Spark for the holy war tinderbox....

I think this is only the case where we're talking well over 250bhp/ £10-15k +

Ford engine is no worse than any other don’t be put off. You would be very pleased with a Vx or a Zetec if you are after a 16valver. Yes lots has been made of the merits of both engines on here but unless you are after big power (250bhp +) then either engine will be just great. ;)

Irrespective of the argument of Vx  v Zetec the Zetec is renowned for being very oil tight indeed (only because I honestly don't know as I have no experience of one, I cannot comment on the Vx).

With regard to the argument of Vx v Zetec, a search of the BBS will find much comment (well worth a read!!;) but to summarise for you, the Zetec is the best ....

I wouldnt do that without begging/blagging a ride in each. They each have different characteristics and you need to experience this. Do not just buy the car that seems the best value.

Having said that I bought the first ever Westy i looked at and it was the best value and it was the right choice,.... oh and it was a VX16v    Brian.

well i must admit i would prefer a vx purely and simply cos thats whats i have got now, but i havent been in either ford or vx westies in fact i have only actually driven one which was a 1400 16v k series but that was enough to make me want one, i will mainly use it for fast road use and will happily look at any 1.8/2.0 valvers be them vx or zetec and give em a good test drive b4 parting with my hard earned cash !! :)

well i reckon its b*****k*, ive seen as many smokin astra's and nova's as ive seen fords, if you ask me the most prone to smokin is bl**** nissan mica's and peugoat's, the difference with ford's is they still just plod on smokin away the rest f**k up totally rendering them useless. :p that's why you see em running around still
