how do you back the pistons off on the rear calipers? ie. to fit new pads! is there some sort of internal self adjuster or something  :arse:

They wind/screw back in, either using a pair of snipe nose pliers (the hard way) or with a special tool from Sykes Pickavant, available at Halfords for something like 15-20 quid (the eeeeeeeeasy way......)........

Yes it the spacings fit the pins

but it only goes back in with pressure and screwing not just screwing it as it just spins

i have done the job with pipe grips and a G clamp

"would a angle grinder spanner do the job?"

If you have an angle grinder spanner, might you, also, have an angle grinder?

If you do, making your own tool is easy, fast and locost (oops, sorry about that   )

The tool could be a rectangle of  steel plate (say 0.080").  The working end needs to be wide enough to engage dimples on opposite sides of the piston, with a recess ground between the plate's edges deeply enough to allow the creation of tangs which fully engage those dimples.  The other end of the rectangle could be a piece of tubing welded along the edge to ease the force on your hands.

Mine is built this way, thanks to ever useful advice from folks on this list.   :D
