CrashBangWallop Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Good evening people, I've got hold of some tickets to go and see Pendulum at Wembley Arena, next Friday evening. I was thinking of driving there and back from Cambridge. I've never driven in London and was wondering if parking will be easy within a couple of tube stops of Wembley, perhaps? By this I mean free... Not some stupid hiked-up car-park fee. Just a side-street and a bit of a short walk. Looking at Google maps there seems to plenty of side-streets near by, but will they be permit-holders only? Am I expecting gridlock from the M25 inwards? I guess I'm not in the congestion-charge zone? I've got an image of thousands of cars all fighting for a dozen spaces. I'd appreciate an insight into the joys of driving around the outskirts, specifically Wembley. Thanks, Neil Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Get the train all the way. By far the least hassle. Quote
Blatman Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 As you suspect, all the side streets are residents only during day time and event times. If you've never driven to the capital before, then driving to Wembley for an event is going to be a baptism of fire. You'll think you're in Dante's inferno, and you got there via the seven circles of hell. Even I avoid Wembley when an event is on, even if I'm riding the bike! If you want to park nearby, then you need to look at streest south of the North Circular in the Brentfield Road, Harow Road and Park Royal areas. Park Royal is mostly industrial near the North Circ so parking outside of business hours is plentiful, BUT you'll need to get a cab to Wembley 'cos there ain't no buses or tubes that will get you there easily, and if there are, they'll be full of everyone else with the same idea... West or North of Wembley gets you to Perivale/Acton/Ealing, which have residents parkin a-plenty. As you'll be coming from the east (A10 / A1M / M1 I assume) then parking on the south Side of the Circ from the M1 / A41 junction at Brent Cross / Staples Corner is going to lead to an equally tedious onward journey once you actually got past Staples Corner which is always busy as it is. Parking north of the Welsh Harp towards Wembley and approaching Blackbird Hill / East Lane is also going to present issues with the onward journey. Basically, if you're going to drive, leave early, park on site at Wembley and cough up. Expect it to take an hour or more to get out of the car park after the event though. As Scruffy says, get the train... Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I've always found road side parking around wembley. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 QUOTE As Scruffy says, get the train... I've got residents parking I can use in east acton, and the only time I take the train anywhere is if I'm going to London. Quote
Blatman Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I'll take a recce round Wembley tomorrow to update myself about the current residents restrictons for parking during events, but for sure the last time I was there (November last year for Eddie Izzard) I took a cab... and I live 15/20 minutes away by motorbike... But there was 5 of us, and it took an hour to get out Quote
CrashBangWallop Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 I wasn't thinking I'd ever get close to Wembley itself. Parking restrictions seem to be in effect, otherwise there wouldn't be sites like this, I guess? I was thinking more along the lines of parking a couple of tube-stops out - perhaps Preston Road or Northwick Park stations. Train and tube is going to £60+. Whereas the car will cost me £20 in petrol plus around a tenner for the tube, if that. Though, street-view on Google-maps seems to show an awful lot of the streets are single yellows. What do those restrictions denote? Having just forked out £60 for our tickets, I don't want to spend another £60 on trian fares, as one journey will be at peak time. Cheers for the info. Quote
wilsonch Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Firstly trying to drive into/around north west London on a Friday is going to be just a little busy leave plenty of time!... Parking a few tube stops away might work but would advise that at gig end time there are 10's of thousands all trying to get out any many of them onto a tube can take quite a while. There are several buses from Ealing to Wembley but again when you come out it could be a long journey home. I have never tried to get a parking space 'on site' but its probably your best option, just pay the money. Blatters, "West or North of Wembley gets you to Perivale/Acton/Ealing" ER dont you mean south of wembley.....sorry just nit picking Quote
Blatman Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Yup. I made a typo.... Ealing / Acton are westibound along the A406. Perivale is reached via the westbound A406 before taking a right at either the A40 or northbound up Hanger Lane itself, although you never actually get north of the Wembley lattitude before reaching Perivale... Captain Colonial Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 How recently? Was it the "White Horse" FA Cup Final? Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 You could always park at epping, and get a zone 1-6 tube ticket. Quote

Preston Road adn Northwick Park are both surrounded by residents' parking areas with a very few P&D parking spaces. In fact, I can't at the moment think of a single tube station in North West London that isn't. Realistically I reckon you'd have to go out as far as Pinner before finding free parking. Single yellow line means parking is restricted during the relevant hours. The relevant hours will be on a sign stuck to a lamp post somewhere (sometimes). In order to find out what they are, you have to go there and find out what the sign says. Quote
ACW Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Ive been to Webley a few times with Rugby recently and whilst Ive had hospitality parking allocated, there were loads of private parking been sold at between 5 - 10 quid for the day, which in London terms is free. Quote

So, they're legit? Is it basically people who live nearby letting you use their driveway, while they park on the road, with their parking permit? On the one website I looked at (above), they were between £15-£20. I'll have more of a delve around, but if you know of any specific ones, I'd welcome the info. Thanks, Neil Quote
