markg Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 do any parts of the loom require extra protection to satisfy sva and if so what is the best material to use also would it be ok to fix it with p clips along the transmission tunnel? or are there any better fasteners available? Quote
Liam Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Avoid any contact with any fuel lines. Use p clips in transmission tunnel. Cable ties every 6 inches or so under the bonnet seem ok although I covered my loom with convoluted conduit of varying sizes which neatens it all up and attached this with cable ties. It also separates the loom from bake lines which are often in close proximity to the loom. Use heat shrink to cover as much of the exposed wiring as possible - bare wires are not appreciated. Make sure things like clutch cables and handbrake cables are properly secured with p clips and not chafing things like steering columns/ axle banjos. Plastic p clips are ok for the loom but steel with plastic inserts for the other items. Liam Quote
steppenwolf Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Use heat shrink to cover as much of the exposed wiring as possible - bare wires are not appreciated. All the above advice is good and heat shrink is fantastic stuff but sometimes it is not possible to install it in some parts of the loom or for generally tidying up the appearance of existing bits of loom and here you should NOT be tempted to use insulating tape as with age and heat the adhesive leaches out making a horrible sticky mess - instead, buy a reel of 'loom tape'. This has no adhesive at all and makes for a very neat and safe finish. Under no circumstances should you cable tie a cable to an existing hydraulic or fuel pipe - the SVA people consider this to be a 'bad thing' ! Quote
markg Posted November 5, 2002 Author Posted November 5, 2002 thanks very much for the advice was thinking the loom looked a bit exposed in places and needed confirmation from someone who has passed sva was not going to fasten things to brake/ fuel pipes as this would look crap! i know no one would see but i would know it was crap and thanks again to everyone who takes the time to reply to my questions Quote
