Jumpjet Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Greetings everyone. The gear stick on my type 9 gearbox has lost all sense of purpose when in neutral. Usually it resides in neutral between 3rd/4th gear - being held there by some sort of slight (spring loaded?) pressure, but now it just stays where its put. I can still select all gears, but reverse and 5th are not as easy as they once were. Is it likely to be something as simple as a broken/misclocated spring? and if so, can it be sorted with the gearbox in situ? Thanks in advance. Quote
wizzer Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Hi Des Someone will be along with a answer soon, all I know is there's no spring on the gear lever so it may be a box out job Tony Quote
greenandmean Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 There is a plastic saddle on the type E box that just clips on the shaft under the gear lever, pretty sure its the same on the type 9, £ 3.95 plus vat at Burton Power. Tel 020 8518 9194 or www. burtonpower.com Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Yep white nylon/plastic saddle on type 9 as well Quote
Jumpjet Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 So is it simply a matter of removing the gaiter to get access to the gear stick to replace the plastic collar? Quote
greenandmean Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Yep remove gaiter, unscrew gear lever and lift out, on the shaft just inside you should see the remains of the old saddle, pull off (easier said than done on mine, covered in grease/made of plastic/nylon and only room to get one finger in, long nosed pliers wouldn't grip it ) just keep trying. New one pushed straight on, refit lever and my god what a differance. Hope thats all it is, if not it's got to be the easiest and cheapest thing to try first. Quote
Hammy Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Note that the plastic saddle is not symetrical - fit with the bit sticking out to the right hand or pointing towards the drivers seat -will be obvious when you fit ! Quote

Jumpjet Posted May 14, 2010 Author Posted May 14, 2010 Job done - in about 15 minutes. Hardest past was getting the carpet out of the way. Gearbox has the extension fitted and when I removed the gear stick there was actually nothing there - it had obviously broken up and fallen out. Hard to believe that such a small plastic part like this could make such a difference to the feel of the gear change. Once again, many thanks for all your advice. Quote
