At the risk of being a very unhappy bunny.

I failed SVA on emissions with a standard (unleaded conversion) Pinto on 45's. I got 4.6 and due to the age of the engine (Sept. 1986 unfortunately) it has to be 3.5.

Am I wasting my time trying to get it down to that figure or is it possible?

Losing the will to live...............:(  :(  :(

Yep August '86 - July '95 needs to meet a CO of 3.5%

Even August '75 - July '86 requires a max of 4.5%.

I suggest if you have not done so get the car to a reputable tuner for an 'MOT' and see if they can play with emissions, you may be able to forsake performance to get below 3.5%.

I am assuming your HC were OK, they would need to be under 1200ppm.

I understand the correct jetting of the carbs can improve emissions

Your not doing too bad, I had an Escort RS Turbo (injection) that was tested at 8.9% CO, it was doing 15mpg and smelt like a lawnmower.

Hope you sort it

Sorry Liam but this ones going to make you slightly sick. A guy down the road from me has been building a blade engined car for the last year or so. I bumped into him  afew days ago, the day after his SVA. He passed with no strings attached. He was sumwhat suprised that many points he had been expecting to have checked were not, ie no protrusion/radius guage checks etc. However back to the point, his hydrocarbons, which should be as stated <1200ppm were actually 3000 but it was passed. In the words of the tester, "its a bit over but I'm sure you'll soon sort that". Brilliant result but it just goes to show the discrepancy in the standard applies. You pays your money then you pray. ??? Brian.

Liam,

You should have no problems getting down to under 3.5 assuming the engine's in reasonable condition and the carb jettings are somewhere near right. Most probably the idle mixture screws need to be adjusted a little. Have you gone through a set up on the carbs? Ie balanced the air flow through each barrel, set idle speed and mixture?

With DCOEs the idle mixture is set separately to the fuelling under load so there is no performance penalty in complying with the emissions limit at idle.

Hi Brian,

My blade was the same, but...

if it fails the hydrocarbons at idle, you are allowed to do a fast idle test at 2500rpm. The blade is combusting much more cleanly then and it sails thru.

Cheers,

Thanks everybody. I am a bit more confident now and have put the razor away!. Interesting to note that some testing stations are not bothered about radii etc. Although I found Leighton Buzzard very helpful and considerate they were certainly keen on protrusions and would not allow any temporary solutions, which is reasonable anyway.

I would not disuade anyone from using L/B.

Sorry, forgot to mention, It was the test centre in Derby in this case.  :xmas: Brian.

I'd suggest a good rolling road session.

1.7 xflow - twin 45's - at the last MOT they stuck the monitor in anyway - even though its irrelevant for this car.  It got 500ppm HC emmissions at idle. Yep 0.5%. :p which is the same as the previous year, and the previous..(repeat back to 1997)......Nuff said? :p

You could always try shoving a Broquet / Fuel Cat inline and see if it helps (they claim it will) mines got one.... :p

No no no no no no no...............

Don't ever waste your money on a Broquet, or bag of lead balls or any other in tank or in (fuel) line "catalyst" or whatever they call them. They are all rubbish (sorry Warren), despite what the manufacturers claim.......... Spend the money at the rolling road..........

Or sacrifice a chicken at midnight just after filling the car up with fuel, it will be just as effective .......
