Handbrake cable

Recommended Posts

Having fitted the rear calipers and handbrake lever, I have routed the cable and however much I slacken the adjuster I can only get one cable end onto the lever, there is not enough slack to fit the other end.

So far I have tried disconnecting the handbrake end, great but then I can't re-connect it.

Also tried to move caliper lever to allow cable end over but it seems to be putting too much tension in the cable and it will still not allow me to push the end cleat onto the caliper lever.

What am I doing wrong?  Any suggestions.

Thanks.

I had a similar difficulty with this task. As you indentify correctly, disconnecting the handbrake end is not the solution.

All you can do is enlist the assistance of someone else and whilst one of you swings the cable hook down under pressure using a screwdriver to get a good purchase, the other forces the cable onto the hook by grabbing it with a pair of pliers and pushing like mad .... I seem to recall that the loss of blood and knuckle skin assisted greatly in this endeavour!

A loop of string over the caliper lever that you can push down with your foot is the easiest way I found to do the job without assistance.

I had a similar problem, and eventually found that the calipers I had were fitted with a different length operating lever. I eventually had the cable modified. Search for my Post on the 5th September.  Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice.  Cable is now fitted.

Only damage is my knuckles     :)
