Captain Colonial Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Sign in to Messenger. Go to the "Show Menu" icon on the right side just below your Mail icon, click on it and a pull down menu appears - choose Tools, the Options at the bottom. In Options menu on left, choose Sign In. Untick Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log into Windows, and also untick Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet. That should do it, hopefully. Quote
Stuart Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 This is on XP but should be similar on 7 Windows key and R at the same time Type msconfig Select startup tab Untick everything you don't want to start on startup Then Windows key and R at the same time Type services.msc Find the Messenger listing and turn it to manual if you ever use it or disabled if you don't Not sure you actaully need to do both of those but it should stop it Quote
Blatman Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Captain C's method will stop it logging in automatically. Stuarts method will stop the programme running at start up and sitting in the background taking up resources. It will still run perfectly normally if you click it's icon / shortcut or whatever, but doing what Stuart suggests with as many programmes as possible will really improve boot up times and general performance for any PC to which they are applied. Blatman Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 From your opening post, Captain Colonials answer is what you are looking for as a basic fix. Quote
dombanks Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 in the sign in section all of the boxes are unticked. that is apaprt from one which is greyed out "open windows live messenger main window when windows live messenger starts. the atuo start with windows is unticked and still the sodding thing persists, it looks like im doing no work as it keeps coming to the front! sodding thing in the start menu it is part of the windows live folder so i think ill have a go at getting rid of it all Quote
peterg Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Have you rebooted for the changes to take effect Quote
dombanks Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 yes, ive figured it now. it turns out its starting up cos i go to a website that uses windows live such as MSN.co.uk and its just being helful as it thinks i will want to sign on. So its also there in the add-on's thing in windows explorer. you have to disable it there also. Quote
