adhawkins Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 Hi, Can anyone tell me what's involved (in terms of cost mostly ) in converting either a Zetec or Vauxhall engined car from Carbs to fuel injection? I'm in the market for a car right now, and would prefer a fuel injected one for the (hopefully) better reliability and fuel economy. However, a lot of the cars I'm seeing advertised appear to be running on carbs. All advice appreciated. Ta. Andy Quote
Blatman Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 1200-1500 of your English pounds, depending on how lucky/resourceful you are in picking up second hand stuff....... It's a lot of money, but the rewrads are well worth it. Quote
adhawkins Posted October 25, 2002 Author Posted October 25, 2002 Is that 1500 quid plus installing it? If so, how much would someone charge to do the work for me? Any offers? Ta. Andy Quote
Westfieldman Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 Plus a day at the rolling road to get the best out of it. Paul. Quote
Blatman Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 £1500 should see it all done, if you are prudent, and that includes a few hours on the rollers. Like I say, though, you really do need to watch those costs, so spending some time shopping around is well worth it. Quote
adhawkins Posted October 25, 2002 Author Posted October 25, 2002 Again showing my newbie status , but are the people (or companies) around that I could say 'Here's my car, give it back to me with an injection system fitted and fully sorted', and if there are, would they be in this price range, or would I expect to pay a lot more? Thanks. Andy Quote
studbuckle Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 I dont believe it... You've not even found a car and your talking about upgrades! At least you're showing signs of being a true westite Quote
adhawkins Posted October 25, 2002 Author Posted October 25, 2002 Welll...it's more a question of it appears I'm not going to find a Zetec that's already got an injection system fitted, so now I'm wondering if I should hang on for one, or get a carb-based one with a view to an upgrade sometime later. Thoughts anyone? Realistically, what MPG could I expect from a carb-based and injection based Zetec (not that MPG is the only factor of course!. Also, how much more TLC is require to keep a carb-based Westy happy over an injection based one? Andy Quote
Westfieldman Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 Run my carbed car 4000 milesand the only thing I have done to the carbs is change the idle jets up one size and replace a nut on the butterfly spindle my fault it fell off. Paul. If you check the MPG you are not enjoying it enough sell it and get a GTi golf or somthing like that. Quote
peterg Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 Andy, unless you're intending it to be your only car and you commute 100 miles a day (like I did [no, not in the Westfield]before redundancy showed me the error of my ways ) then MPG really isn't an issue - you would have to do some serious mileage to recoup £1500 in petrol costs after 'upgrading' to injection. Over the last 18 months I have bombed around Sussex in my 1800 zetec on carbs and the worst I can get is still over 25mpg and I have a lead right foot - I used a bit more on track days/hillclimbs but then you're basically flat out all the time but even so it's not something to worry about just get one and enjoy it. Pete PS: mine's for sale Quote
