Seeing as everyone is on the subject of type 9 gearboxes.

I took the engine/gearbox out of my 1990 SEiW at the weekend - of course planned for a more simple job for the one that has turned out.

Anyway, two questions.

1. I seem to have quite a lot of play in the input shaft to the gearbox (left/right and up/ down). Is this normal? At first I thought that it must be the bearing, but after removing the front cover, it looked more like the play was between the bearing and the case. Anyone got any ideas?

2. I wanted to replace the clutch release bearing, but don't really know what I should be asking for. I am running a x-flow, with a standard clutch (as far as I know). Ford part number or make and model would be useful if they are still available from Ford.

thanks . ???

Hi Adam.

Its not uncommon to find play on the input shaft, when the gearbox is out it is only supported from one side, and the length of the shaft magnifys any play that is felt. Obviously I cant guarentee it is OK. No funny noises when it was in the car? Or is this why the engine/gearbox is out?

As for the clutch release bearing, AFAIK it should be just a standard Ford Sierra item available at any motor factors.

..adding to Stu's comment, EVERY Type 9 or RS2000 gearbox has a large amount of play at the input shaft. Its designed that way on purpose.

Everyone waggles this input shaft with raised eyebrows the first time!

Its intended for the end to be supported in the crankshaft spigot bearing to hold it rock steady. The play you mention is to allow for slight mis-alignment twixt engine and gearbox.

I considered that - and I believe you. It just seemed strange that there was a big fat bearing at the front of the gearbox if the engine is actually going to do the 'bearing'.

Anyway, peace of mind restored.

...well the 'big fat bearing' is bearing the very high loads inside the 'box. And they ARE big inside gearboxes.

At the engine-end its just a kind of steady/guide bearing holding the shaft on a centre-line. So not much force really, in comparison.

You can get the correct clutch thrust brg easily from Burton's (www.burtonpower.co.uk) they stock all Ford-related engine and gearbox bits.
