DAZ Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 Hi there Hopefully buying a megabalde this weekend ,what is the best way to secure it to the trailer i don't want to damage it before i get it home any advice most welcome. DAZ Quote
peterg Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 A couple of ways depending on what type of straps you have - don't use rope, it will never be as secure as a good tie down strap - if you have the type that loop over the back of the tyre/wheel then just check for clearance around the bodywork once tensioned as they can rub through paint (pack with rags/foam if you can't reroute the strap. If you're using the 'straight' type with hooks on each end or the type that secures as a plain loop back on itself then run it round either the chassis itself or a lower wishbone and back to the trailer tie-down point. Bear in mind that a Westfield is much lighter than a normal car so you don't need to go over the top when tightening the straps - first time I brought my car home I could only get some roof rack type straps in Halfords (500kg breaking strain but I doubled them up) and it didn't move a milimetre over the 300 mile trip back from Leeds Quote
Warren E Smith Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 I've a pair of straps that I had to buy from a trailer hire company in order, once I'd rented the trailer, to actually secure a car onto it....... They claim that under EHS regs they can't rent the straps anymore.... (hmmm - it was 6pm and I was leaving with the westie at 7 a.m.....) So two "pairs"? of "round the wheel" style straps are available. I paid £26 each strap. (no idea yet if that was OTT - suspect it was ) . Straps were said to be suitable to hold "normal" cars Used two straps, the trailer was bl**** soaked in the morning when I had to trailer tow the car, but the car didn't move an inch whilst being towed. send me a message (not email) if you want them (any reasonable offer) I'm nr Bracknell Quote

gregh Posted October 22, 2002 Posted October 22, 2002 It's traditional to drive your Westie home when you 1st buy it Quote
peterg Posted October 23, 2002 Posted October 23, 2002 It's traditional to drive your Westie home when you 1st buy it not 300 miles from Leeds to Sussex in the first week of March it isn't - I drove through a small snowstorm coming down the M1 and saw several accidents on the way and was VERY glad the Westie was on a trailer Quote
kennedyj Posted October 23, 2002 Posted October 23, 2002 ...and the one Daz is thinking of buying has aero screens, so no side-screens, hood... and a long way to drive. But at least this time of the year there won't be many bugs to scrape off your visor or pick out of your teeth Nice motor though -JohnK Quote
