Hit it with a hammer!

No seriously, you'll need to prepare the hard drive before running the XP Installation. Format the drive and remove all partitions (easier said than done though).

Another option (easier but involves additional cost) would be to pop a brand new blank hard drive on the system (in place of the current boot drive), and run the XP install afresh.

You can always tag the original boot device on as a slave for additional storage once the install is complete.

Before doing anything, make sure you have XP Device Driver support for all of your hardware. Also back up any important data.....

Hope this helps - good luck  ;)

As has been said, with a Vista install running, slotting in an XP Pro disc sees the option to install greyed out and so far, I haven't found a way round it. I've got a PC that I want to do the same to... The only way is to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of XP, which is no bad thing. BUT... if the machine has been "designed" to run with XP (like a modern Dell laptop, for instance) the downgrade may cost you the use of the sound card and the wireless card. Not a problem as drivers can be found (in fact, there is a thread covering that subject this week round here somewhere...) but you need to be aware going in...

Its a new laptop (June 09) running Vista and its slow/freezes and not as good as XP.

Think i'll get an upgrade to Windowz 7.

that could be a lack of RAM issue , 'doze7 and Vista are pretty hungry on resources , going Vista could make things worse,  IMO  :t-up:

I went Vista to XP on my laptop recently. New hard drive, checked manufactures web site first to make sure all the required drivers were available for download. (or search for them using Google). Simples. I now have a laptop with a tried and tested operating system that works without any of the problems caused when using Vista! :D

I must be the luckiest b****r in the world as I have never experienced an issue with Vista.

Save to say, however, junior set it up.
