It's begun.....

All the research has finished and its time to get to business!! :)

Got hold of a LSD diff and outer shafts and rear callipers from an XR4, front uprights and front callipers from a Cortina. Now to phone up Westfiled and order that starter kit!!  :t-up:

In the mean time engine and gearbox to be sourced and several hours to be spent in the garage with degreaser, wire brush drill bits, brake seal repair kits, gaskets and several Haynes manuals......

I want a quick cheap, build and preparation is the key!!!!

How have other people approached their Starter Kit build regarding sourcing donor parts ? Get them all first and refurbish, or as and when required ? The first way seems better to me...

Oh for the wallet to do a modular build!!!!! :p

IMO try and leave as much time to the build as possible, as you go on you will acquire contact and find where the best places are to buy.

I sourced a few things before the starter kit, I have allowed 18 months for the build and have so far seen a few bargains 2nd hand etc...best to pace yourself if you want to keep costs down.

All the best with the build, if you want send me a pm and we can talk over the phone sometime.

Regards

I agree, I am sourcing components as I build, this way I have been able to pick up some very good bargains (they do appear). Preperation is the key but also take your time, when its finished nobody will ask you how long it took, everybody will want to know who built it. I plan on 18months to 2 years.

Also this bulletin board is invaluable, I have learned a lot from the experience of others.

Have fun,enjoy,

Peter.

Cheers Guys....

The way I'm approaching it is to get through the equivalent of the first two module stages i.e. upto engine and gearbox installation. This is my budget/progress milestone. I can reach this point with the bits I have and the bits I intend to buy along with the starter kit i.e loom, rack etc. This seems to be a good break point.

Saying that though, I intend to recon my own Zetec (well , at least get the head off and check valve seats/ piston condition..) This will take time and space, and could potentially be done in advance. This will mean I have an engine lying around eating into my valuable garage space though. Dilemma after dilemma!!

I must agree that I intend to savour the build. Yes, I really look forward to having a blast in my very own Westfield (after all, that is what its all about) but the build process should be fun too. No point rushing it as once this car is built I won't have the space to build another. I should enjoy the build while it lasts!!!

Over the coming months there will be numerous posts(no doubt) to this valuable source of info ( and my membership IS in the post  :) ) where I'll rely on the experience and success/failure of others.

I guess I just have itchy feet while I wait for the starter kit to be delivered.
