peterg Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Haha, love the Mk1 Cortina rear lights sounds just like the Batmobile (Adam West as Batman, not these modern intereptations...) Quote
mavhh Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Great machine, I've seen it race loads of times (Classic Le Mans etc). Apparently, it continues accelerating for a number of seconds after you release the "throttle"... but doesn't start accelerating for a number of seconds after pressing it again. So, all the throttle pedal actions are out of sync with the rest of the drive - which could mean foot off, and back on again before you even arrive at a corner! Quote
Liam Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 I remember watching it in the '68 BOAC 500 at Brands where it crashed at Druids. Hugh Dibley, one of the original pilots, has run it at Goodwood FoS a couple of times. Helicopter engine. Blows yer 'at off if you stand too close. Quote
pistonbroke Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Saw it myself, 68 Gaurds Trophy Oulton Park I remember well the whistling turbine sound 56,000 rpm and the heat haze from the vapour trail . The big problem was the throttle lag and lack of engine braking . It was the only gas turbine car to ever win a race though the Lotus56 came close to winning the Indy 500 It lead by a country mile until a $10 wheel bearing failed Yanky Automobile club banned the car after the race on the grounds that it wasnt within the spirit of the regulations Just as well in a way or all racing cars might have become whispering shadows of the cars we love to hear Quote
