Looks like im going to need a new clutch and possibly a gearbox for my westy..

any ideas on costs and time to fit using ford (sierra ) parts......???

Second hand type 9 Sierra gearbox = 30 quid.

New clutch kit for Sierra approx 75 quid for a 'decent' brand.

Time? depends on how good you are twirling spanners and equipment available........

P.s. I am guessing its Pinto power? If its a VX etc, you will need to obtain bits of VX clutch, and bits of Ford clutch. I dont know, but I guess it could be a similar situation for CVH/Zetec fitments too.

New clutch fair enough, but new 'box?

What are the symptoms that make you think the 'box is not in the rudest of health?

probably wont need a box,

Symptoms are .. terrible grating rattling sound when the clutch is up in Neut,1st, 2nd or 4th,

Sound disappears when clutch is depressed,

Doesnt seem to be any loss of power.

Yesterday at Brands , we had a similar noise induced in a couple of high speed corners..

Does this sound like the LSD or a b*******ed clutch???

Difficult to say without actually hearing it.......

Gearbox mainshafts can be noisy, especially in neutral. If the noise disappears when the clutch is dipped, then it's probably OK. I'd be surprised if you can hear the same noise while in gear and moving though, so perhaps there is an unrelated driveline problem. Noises in 4th are particularly unusual, as 4th is normally a direct drive gear, and hence quiet, even in straight cut 'boxes, so it's worth having a look at the diff first. Plate type diffs can be noisy too. ATB's are almost silent, and you'd definitely hear a plate type diff whining away while on the move, no matter how fast you're going.

Sorry if this is a daft question, but are you sure you don't have a straight cut box? You wouldn't be the first person to think a 'box had gone t*ts up, only to find it's a "racing" gearbox. They're bl**** noisy...........

Try and get some-one more knowledgeable to have a listen to it, unless some-one comes up with the answer on here in a minute...........
