Dust covers for ali hubs

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Finally got round to fitting my front ali hubs yesterday and realised that the Cortina dust covers ( ? ) to go over the nut are too small. What do most people use? I'm reluctant to leave the bearings open....

Secondly, I had to use two washers under the nut because as I understand it, the nut should not be tight, just enough to stop the hub moving on the stub axle and then held with the split pin. Have I assumed wrongly?

I started stripping my engine (Zetec) as well, and was wondering what wires/hoses I would need from it. Hopefully none because most have been cut & look rather ruined  :(

Lastly, still need to get an alternator, water pump & starter motor from somewhere. Would it be worth going to a scrappy or am I likely to have more hassle in the longterm with the parts not working? (I have _no_ experiance of the lifetime of said components :D )

Thanks,

- Dan.

In reverse order......

No real probs getting an alternator and starter from the scrappy. If you fancy getting reconditioned items, you will need units for part ex. You can buy them brand new, but they are expensive. But dont bother with second hand water pumps, they dont cost that much, go to your local motor factors and purchase one.

The only thing I can think of that you might need is the crank position sensor, but a lot of folk recommend replacing with brand new when the engine is out because to replace it means hauling the motor out. Not good.

Something doesnt sound right here. I guess you are using Ali hubs on Cortina uprights? You are correct in that the nut should not be tight, but you shouldnt need two washers there to take up the play in the bearings, the only washer that should be there is the one with the tang that aligns with a groove in the stub axle to stop it turning. The nut should have a pressed steel cup fitting over the top which allows it to be secured by the split pin. By moving the cup around on the nut when it has been adjusted correctly, will allow the split pin to locate it in position.

Assuming that the bearings have been installed correctly, and everything else is OK, the nut should be adjusted as follows;

Tighten nut up with a spanner until it is 'nipped' up, whilst constantly turning the hub. This will allow the bearings to seat properly. Loosen nut off, and tighten it up by hand as tight as possible. That is BY HAND! Check adjustment by dropping a wheel on and rocking top and bottom assessing for play. There should be a very small amount, this allows for expansion when things warm up. It's really something that comes with experience, but it is probably safer to have slightly too much than none at all.

When you are happy, just keep trying the pressed steel cup in different positions on the nut until you find a position that allows the split pin to go through.

Do you mean in diameter or not deep enough? Diameter means that you should of had some supplied with the hubs, if they are not deep enough then I reckon that this and the above problem are connected.

Thanks for the reply.

Correct about the Cortina uprights. I was just using the nut that came with them and it is just a plain nut - no steel cup :(  Similarly, I was assuming the dust caps from the Cortina hubs would be ok but the diameter is too small and they won't stay in the hub. Since I didn't receive any with my hubs I guess I'd better phone the factory again. :D

I've got numbers for both the alternator (92AB-10300FB) & starter (Lucas LRS707), but will these be of any use to a scrappy?

If not, does anyone know what cars they come from. AFAIK, the alternator is from a Fiesta but when looking at prices for new ones, there's a choice of about 20 and I've no idea where the starter motor's from.......

Starter is from 1800 CVH Sierra IIRC.

Dunno about the alternator though mate.

For the steel cup thingys, they use exactly the same set-up on the back end of Novas and ****e like that if you have trouble locating new ones.
